Masmid Govoha Kicks Off 15th Year With A Bang

Jan 04 2010 5:47 pm

mg sefer logo 2 copyMasmid Govoha has started its 15th year with a bang. Over 1,800 6th and 7th graders participated this week to learn over a half-a-million minutes in the first week. 600 of those masmidim are based right here in Lakewood. Masmid Govoha was started 15 years ago here in Lakewood with 44 masmidim. By the second year it grew to 2,000 masmidim and never looked back. In the first year the 44 masmidim were from one yeshiva; this year Masmid Govoha has 2,600 masmidim registered in 22 cities, 39 yeshivas and 130 classes.

Masmid Govoha is ‘the most unique learning program in the world’. It is the only learning program where every child can be a winner. The program runs for 10 weeks from Chanukah to Purim. In short, a Masmid gets 1 point for every 1 minute they learn, review, or do their Rebbi’s homework at night. MG accepts up to 60 minutes per night, but rewards any boy who learns at least 20 minutes.

The points are updated and rewarded weekly. Each Masmid can earn cash for his class, with a ‘special’ every 3 weeks. Masmidim who average 30 minutes a night are invited to a catered School Asifa Banquet at year’s end. Each week over 600 boys are given honorable mention in our full page in Yated Ne’eman, as well as in Masmid Govoha’s “Kol HaMasmid” (download a free copy here).

All the rules and prizes were created to help the kids win, and any specific questions are up to the rebbe in that yeshiva. For the most part a child joins because most kids learn for 20 minutes a night anyway and they end up getting prizes in effect for just filling out the form. Once they are in it, they slowly want to reach the next level of recognition and prizes. The success of the program is that approx 80% of the masmidim that participate increase their night time learning by an average of 15 minutes a night.

If you would like to join or have your class join please call our Rebbi/Parent Hotline at 732-370-7070.

15 years ago me and 4 boys met R’ Yisroel Zlotowitz in the library of BMG when he was a bachur. He told us how he wanted to start this program, and he explained to us how it would work. That boys would get prizes for learning and how he wants the program to stretch from lakewood to cities all over. At the time, we laughed at him. However, as kids we were willing to do anythng for prizes. Now fifteen yrs later it is amazing to see how much the program expanded and how R’ Zlotowitz really fullfilled his dream. We learn from this, someone who tries to do something good, hashem really helps him! Keep up the great work and I am looking forward to send my sons iyh.
