A Response To Critics, Setting The ‘Immigration Issue’ Straight

Mar 06 2010 10:06 pm

Hershkowitz ICE sign_wmI really did not want to comment on any more topics until my official announcement. But it seems that Kem wants to answer for me regarding the cleaning lady issue. I would never comment negatively on the plight of the hard working Hispanic cleaning ladies in our town. Most are hard working, honest women, that have become indispensable to the running of our town. Before kem starts accusing me of wanting to round up cleaning ladies, and have them shipped back to oaxaca, he should know one very important thing about me. I believe that everyone has the right to pursue happiness wherever they wish. If a Hispanic person came here illegally that was their decision whether they wanted to take the chance of being arrested at the border. Once they are here we have the responsibility to treat them as fellow human beings. The illegal activity that they did in order to get here does not make their existence illegal. If they can work in our society legally they should have a right to be here as much as a person fortunate enough to be born here.

What we need is an avenue to help those that want to join our community to do so.

We have programs to supposedly teach Hispanics English, we fund invisible buses to help them get to work. Yet there is no organized effort on the part of our town to promote their responsibility to become citizens of the place they live in.

Perhaps we fear what would happen if they had a right to vote. Perhaps we do not want them advancing beyond cleaning lady, laborer status.

This indifference to their existence causes the criminal element to flourish amongst the hard working, family oriented Hispanic population. That is what causes people in our town to complain, and wrongly accuse all Hispanics for all the ills of our town. That is why people do not understand a threat to drug dealers using our town for their operations, being enabled by our own landlords, as being separate from the plight of the common undocumented resident in our town.

So kem before you start pulling out your ICE, golus, daas torah, or any other inane propaganda diatribes from your pocket, know one thing.

I have had cleaning help, and nurses in my home that were Hispanic, Polish and , Jamaican. I have had roofers, electricians, framers, painters, and movers work in my home. I get served by them at Bagel Nosh, Circa, and Glatt Bite.

Since you seem to be so obsessed with me Kem, you can call any one of them and ask how they are treated by me. I think you will be surprised to find out that I treat all of them with respect, and deference. I don’t expect them to clean up after me when I eat. I don’t bark orders at them as if I am better than them. I don’t expect them to run and jump to my every command.

When I hear a woman ask my wife if she knows of a cleaning lady, and proceeds to complain that she needs one that will scrub the floor on her hands and knees, I am sickened to my stomach. I would not blame any cleaning lady for stealing everything she can get away with from someone that would demean her like that.

I will not respond further to you since I, and those that deal with me daily, know what type of person I am. Your character assassinations will do nothing to change that.

And for those that do not know me yet, I hope my future accomplishments will reflect upon my character.

Kem, unless you wish to call me personally, or enter into a public debate (although I don’t even know what you stand for), I can no longer take anything you say seriously. I will just ignore you from now on.

Hershel.

Dear HershEl, Before I say goodbye forever :( I want to make a couple of things clear.
1: I do think you are an honest and straight person.
2: All my criticizing was not in anyway directed against you as a person I DO NOT KNOW YOU!! I was criticizing the public actions and policy YOU presented to us.
3: I too feel that my work is done. I have stated my concerns. There would be no use in constantly bickering, My hope is that maybe there are some issues that I bought up you will think about them and maybe…
4: I never meant any personal harm to you, PLEASE be moichel if you felt any.

Why does scrubbing a floor make it right to steal??? If she doesn’t like scrubbing a floor just leave that house, why justify stealing, if i don’t like the price on a item at your store would that justify stealing it???

    Hershel u LOST my vote!

  • Go Hershel!!! says:

    Hershel,
You really make me happy, knowing that there are some people in our town that respect others regardless of their social status. I myself try to treat everyone I meet with respect.
We sometimes forget, that not so long ago, our grandfathers came to this wonderful country looking for opportunity. They did not appreciate getting treated poorly. Yet, we forget really quickly. My Hispanic gardener works 3 jobs and works 15 hours a day, without exaggeration. I really do not know his legal status. However, I really admire him and treat him with respect. He didn’t come to this country to sit around and get sympathy. He came to work. And I think that the majority of the immigrants have the same work ethic.
Perhaps, if we gave them legal status, we could collect taxes from them. So perhaps Hershel is right. Just perhaps, it would be in the best interest of our community to help our Hispanic brethren gain legal status, and then they could contribute to the town budget. They already send their children to our public schools and get health care. I think overall, everyone will gain.
And while we are on the subject of tolerance, perhaps our community could start having some tolerance for people who are not the stereotype lakewood person. It will only help Mashiach come quicker.
    God Bless

    March 6, 2010 at 11:59 pm

Hershel is 100% right about the illegal residents in this country. If we let them in, and we let them stay(we absolutely do) , then we need to give them some kind of a status.
They need a working permit so that they can work legally and pay taxes. They need a drivers license, for there safety and our safety. Once they have a license they can buy a car legally with insurance, and DMV inspection for there safety and our safety.
Bottom line is the government makes them illegal and treats them like illegals so naturally they act like illegals. However if they would be treated with respect and we give them the tools to live normal lifes then they will act respectfully.

    Dearest kim,
Thank you for bringing up all your concerns. You were a wonderful sparring practice for any future debates.
I did not want to dismiss any of your concerns outright. I just wanted you to understand that we are looking for solutions. You need to know all the variables on an issue before invalidating any ideas.
Many of your criticisms were based on a lack of knowledge regarding the legal use of UEZ funds, or what the benefits of having a downtown shopping district brings to a town. Your further attacks regarding my lack of asking daas torah were quite insulting. I have been in contact with many mashgichim and roshei yeshivas. They know what my intentions are, and while they have concern for my safety, are supportive of what I am doing. I have stated very clearly that I am not anti anybody or any organization. I, along with my supporters, just want to see an end to the status quo that has been slowly destroying this great town for years now.
As far as what I said regarding scrubbing floors on hands and knees, and theft. I did not say I condone theft for mistreatment. I was saying I fully understand it. If Germany sends my mother an extra reparations check in error, would you expect her to return it? There are times that theft or other crimes can be understood. I am not saying it is legal to steal(obviouslyconsidering my whole platform). But when a person is abused or mistreated it gives them validation to feel that what they are stealing is rightfully theirs.
Fortunately, the same cannot be said regarding an overpriced LEGO set. Although I have found many empty boxes in my store, and the contents were missing, which leads me to believe that some. people feel otherwise. I hope this explanation gets your vote back.

for the record many of “our grandfathers” DID come in illegally. in fact, post WWII, my grandfather was arrested and jailed in Ellis Island when he arrived until a relative got him out, and my grandmother sneaked in from Canada through some Indian reservation. i’m sure there were many others desperate to escape Europe that also entered illegally.

while I respect and admire your courage and tenacity in your attempt to repair some of Lakewoods ills, I nevertheless must disagree with your post at 12:05.

IMHO Moral equivalency is a slippery slope that one should not attempt without full body armour because of it’s dangerous outcome.

Case in point: can you really equate cleaning on hands and knees with someone that survived Aushwitz. And is getting reparations.
I know you are not equating them but it sounds bad. Very bad.

Therefore if I was your campaign manager I would say: Hershel mein tiere get some rest. And put this terrible tzushtel to bed.

  • Anonymous says:

HH you were my hero and now you lost my vote! You can try to backtrack all that you want, but you are being ridiculous.
    1. Many people clean and scrub on their hands and knees. You said that a lady looking for that service sickens you. Really? Is this lady looking to tie up a cleaning lady and force her to do this??? She is looking for a lady who is WILLING to perform that service. She will compensate this lady for cleaning her house. She will also ask her to clean toilets, take out garbage etc. If this cleaning lady does not wish to do any of these activities, let her leave and find another job. There are plenty of these jobs available in Lakewood as you will find out when you start looking for domestic help.
    2. You said you would condone theft in this situation. Stop trying to change what YOU said!
    3. The straw that broke the camels back for me is bringing Aushwitz into this. You are trying to backtrack on this as well, as many politicians have over the years. Fact is you made a fatal mistake by comparing the nazis to a lakewood housewive asking a cleaning lady to willingly scrub her floors.
    YOU LOST MY VOTE!!

    Dear TLS editor,
Please do not spare me any of your reader’s astute criticisms. I am fully capable of defending myself against people that have reading comprehension problems.
I never ever said I condone theft of any kind, in any case. I simply meant that I can understand why a person would feel validated in stealing in a case where they are made to feel una ppreciated or abused. As to cleaning on your hands and knees. I was refering to women that I heard say the cleaning help refuses to go on their hands and knees. They tell them if they don’t do it , they will fire them. That in my view is coersion and abuse. There is a reason mops with handles were created. If you have a mesorah from your mother that the best way to clean the floor is to get on your knees, by all means do it. But don’t force another person by threatening to fire them. As far as the holocaust referencesare concerned, I use them all the time. I am a child of survivors, it is just the way I talk. I am all too aware that on any given day all the good that our lord has bestowed upon us can end, and our entire world can be turned upside down. That is why we must treat everyone with the utmost respect.
How many yidden were helped simply because they treated others nicely before the war?

I guess I will have to count on the votes of those that have better reading comprehension than you.
And I also see I need to choose my words much more carefully to avoid future misunderstandings.
    But I doubt I will.

I once overheard Hershel talking about cleaning floors before Pesach.
He called it “backbreaking work”. How dare he say that. Why should he break someone’s back and permanently paralyze them just so he can have a clean floor. I also know he complained about Pesach products.
He said it cost him an arm and a leg. He is nuts! Better to fast on Pesach than to amputate your limbs.

Yes he cares about people, all people.
And you want to condemn him for that? Pick your battles. This one you lost.
You gonna blame him because he says he wants to be nicer to people?
He is not giving mussar he’s just saying how he feels.he knows what he’s talking about too. I stole once from a boss I worked for. He ripped me off every week on my salary. He subtracted every extra minute I went over my lunch break. He constantly found things for me to do when I finished my work. Would make me stay late to clean up, and say that its part of the job and I don’t get paid hourly for that. I worked hard and he treated me like garbage. So before I quit I stole yabout 400 dollars from the register. I felt he owed it to me. He took much more from me.

It is not easy rejecting as many as one out of three applicants. I personally know of a recent(closed door) meeting that took place about this. There was tremendous concern and sensitivity to the feelings of ALL the applicants as well as to their families.
Bottom line is that a rejection hurts. Period. With a shidduch, with a job, with a bank, and with a school. I have so much respect for the people who start schools and besides all their fundraising
