Report: Men Have More Leisure Time Than Women

Mar 10 2010 10:09 am

leisureMen enjoy half an hour more of leisure time each day than women, a report claims. The international survey found that men spent longer watching television, meeting friends, playing sport or pursuing hobbies than woman. The Organisation of Economic Co-operation and Development, made up of the world’s richest nations, said that British men ranked close behind France and America in the league table of countries where women work harder than men. The report, released to mark International Women’s Day, called for greater equality for women.

It said that “governments and firms need to do more to tackle the gender equality gap.”

Previous OECD reports have suggested that the difference may be more to do with how each gender chooses to spend its time which was not taken into account in the new report.

The OECD concluded that shopping, grooming, having a lie-in or taking a long lunch all count as work rather than leisure.

If these are taken into account British men have only 10 minutes more spare time a day than women.

The report said: “Men universally report spending more time in activities counted as leisure than women. Gender differences in leisure time are wide across OECD countries.”

The 32-minute leisure advantage for men in Britain compares with 38 minutes in the US, 33 minutes in France, 50 minutes in Belgium and 22 minutes in Germany.

Italian men spend nearly 80 minutes a day more than women on leisure time.

Across the OECD countries, 62 per cent of women have jobs, and women earn a fifth less than men, said the Daily Mail.

Officials said the gap was a result of women taking time off work to concentrate on bringing up their children. APP/Telegraph

if hillel was able to work and learn, the men of this generation should too. Learning is a privilege and men have to earn it by compensating doing some of the woman’s task while she goes out and does the ENTIRE job of the man (ie: earning a living). They both need and deserve some leisure time but overall the women of lakewood work MUCH MUCH MUCH harder than the men. When we have men going to daven at 6:30, coming home to get the kids on the bus and clean up from breakfrast, go to learn, get the kids at 2 and make supper an then help with other household chores when their wives come home at 4 and feel like conking out but they can’t because they have to deal with many cranky, tired, hungry and yes precious children. Then let the men go back and learn and come home in the evening and be up at night with the baby etc…. When we have men keeping this schedule, it still won’t be as difficult as the woman’s workload. I am not saying this out of bitterness but i truly believe that the women of this town are taken advantage of to a certain extent EVEN when they really want this themselves.

Actually I was referring to a “normal” situation in which the man goes out and works hard all day and the woman stays home and takes care of the home, kids etc. From the article I understood that still a husband would end up with more ‘leisure” time, I was saying that the teva of the world is this way in order to allow even the working man time to learn torah.
As far as Lakewood benei torah are concerned they do avodes parech too when they get the kids up dressed, take em to babysitter, pick them up give them lunch and then have to have patience for a wife after a full days work while they are falling asleep from learning so hard all day.
