An LPD Officer requested that TLS remind the public about the importance of writing down yours or your family member’s bike’s serial number. “It’s the best chance we have at recovering a stolen or lost bike”, the Officer says. “If you can’t find one, scraping your name or number onto the bike is also a good idea”.
The majority of serial numbers are located under the bottom bracket where the two pedal cranks meet.
To locate it, turn your bike upside down and record the number. If there is no serial number there, then check places like the headset at the front of the bike or the rear stays.
A photo of your bicycle can also be helpful.
The best chance at recovering a stolen bicycle is having a registered serial number. These numbers are used by Police across the nation. You need the manufacturer’s serial number to register your bicycle.
i’ll do that this weekend
For $1 you can register you bike with the Lakewood Police Department’s Traffic and Safety Unit. You bring in your bike and they put a registration sticker on it, give you a copy of your information and they keep a copy on file in the office. If your bike is located it is identified quickly and returned to you.
