State Pulls Sudden Stunt In Tiny Tots Saga

boe meeting first with new members 4-26-10At last night’s BOE meeting, the Board was informed that the NJ Dept of Education was ready to rescind the entire 4 million dollars Pre-School funding for the Lakewood School District if the contract with Tiny Tots is allowed to continue. The memo clearly stated that the Tiny Tots program, both for special education and regular education is not up to par, and will be ineligible for any State funding. The memo required the District to bring the entire program back in-house.

The Board had previously overcome Administration opposition and voted to keep the TT program alive. However, under these conditions, it became an impossibility. The District will create a mirror program to the Tiny Tots program, with culturally sensitive teachers for each student. The program will be housed in a separate fenced in area made up of 8 trailers.

After 2 months of efforts to keep the program alive as was previously reported by TLS, the Board was forced by the State to rescind that action.

  1. so the board members want these frum kids to go to public schools? what will culturally sensitive teachers help if they are in PUBLIC SCHOOL??????

  2. sounds like the adminstration pulled a fast one on the frum board members by calling down the state and trashing tiny tots to the state.i have sent by child to TT and its a great program. the tiny tots program was rated the highest by the boe last year from all the programs.

  3. I really don’t feel bad for you. I have a son that is in the public school system. Because in Lakewood we focus on physical handicap children and shy away from the kids with mental issues. My son was in learning the top of his class and the rebbi overall was able to control him but the English teacher could not handle him and one thing let to another and he ended up with no place to go. No one care that a few boy is losing everything, so i say to you all welcome to the system we all helped create.

  4. Main news in the Asbury today a guy gets 2 years & 30K fine for killing 2 cats, OH my. I guess he should have killed people they may have been easier on him.
I amsuprised you didn’t post the news, I may have quoted a little wrong here.

  5. The way this happend was masterly planned by SOMEONE (not the frum board members), who did not have the consideration to be concerned over the many children that recieve the care they need from tiny tots!

  6. If you would attend a board meeting once in a while you would know what’s going on in town other then reading information on the scoop. The State demanded this be done or loose $4,000,000.00 what would you have done.

The school board must act for all children of Lakewood.

  7. they run an amazing program it would be terrible if this program would have to stop and force frum kids to be in public school.
isn’t there anything we can do????

  8. Did anyone from the state go down to the boe trailers or their own program and even bother to make mention that their failing system is well below any of our institutions. If the state would be as hard on themselves as they are on a terrific well run program maybe they wouldnt be the failing system it has become. Shame on the state for politicizing what is important to our community

  9. This is absolutely outrageous their program is absolutely amazing. The staff is extremely professional and caring, and my son has improved immensely in Tiny Tots special education program. What is not up to par is the public school system which has been failing for years.

  10. I absolutely agree the public school system has been failing for years and is clearly not up to par,yet most of our tax dollars goes to keep it alive. Tiny Tots program which is outstanding they want to close. CLOSE THE FAILING PUBLIC SCHOOLS TODAY.

  11. The concept of closing schools that are “not up to par” sounds really good to me. We should first apply it the public school system which is wasting most of our tax dollars. It has been failing for years and besides ruining the future of our children it is a total waste of tax dollars.

  12. lets line up all the tens of thousands of kids in front of the public school on 7th street to register. the governor will be here within an hour with vouchers. we are saving trenton hundreds of millions of dollars a year & they kill us on school taxes, we cant get normal busing, we are abused from all sides!
at least let tt profit from the deal? the owner contribute to all the local schools very genouresely

  13. You write “Public school programs should be administered by the local public school. It is not a way for people to make money”.Well if the Lakewood public school system is not a way for people to make money than what exactly is it. It surely is not for education purposes since everyone agrees it has been failing for years. The administrators absolve themselves from responsibility by saying that they have a high percentage of immigrant children. If you cannot educate the children than close the schools.

  14. This sounds like some sort of inside job…Tiny Tots is top notch! what exactly is not up to par? There curriculum, staff, organization, devotion, cleanliness, care is top notch!!! What is this all about??Something seems fishy…

  15. what is lakewood doing about this crisis hundreds of kids ar going to be out of school this is a scam !!!!

  16. Close the Public Schools ???
Thats never going to happen , the state would step in first and run the school system .
Education is for ALL the students in Lakewood , not just those who attend private schools

  17. It is shocking that the state can close down a high performing educational facility without some sort of due process and explanation. This seems to be purely politically motivated without any regard for what is best for the children. I would expect the board to stand up to the mafia styled threat of either my way or nothing. If they claim that TT is “not up to par” let them prove it.

  18. I have heard of Tiny Tots but I do not know much about it. Is it a state run facility? is it for jewish community? I am not jewish but am looking to enroll my son in preschool, can he apply to Tiny Tots?

  19. i heard that TT is telling all parents of children getting serviced through the BOE to call their case managers and demand an explanation.

  20. You are 100% right education is for ALL the students in Lakewood and that is precisely why we should close the public schools. Our children deserve better than a chronically failing school system. With the amount of money spent on public education there has to be a better option than ruining our children’s future year after year.

  21. go after them with lawyers thay cant just refuse money bec they don’t like one contract that’s not the way it works there is a system in place for that…

  22. who said some trailer park with new teachers no playground and less secure buildings (no buildings actually) will be better then a proven experienced and amazing preschool with all the facility’s to handle these special kids we need to protest now!!!!

  23. basically the public school system which is old fashioned and doing a terrible job, is jealos of TT. So they are doing everything they can to get rid of them.

  24. Students from an outstanding private institution are forced to join a failing public school system in trailers. This sounds like a comedy show,it would be laughable if it were not true.

  25. It is totally unacceptable for the BOE to use such threatening tactics to get their way. There is an appropriate of dealing with community affairs with a dialog and understanding. Giving in to bullying only encourages more of the same. The board should not give in,if they want all or nothing then the answer is nothing.

  26. Please— close the public schools?! really? I have news for you, without the Lakewood public school system the private sector gets NO money. You need a public school system in the town to receive funds. So, please, please close the public schools. And enough with the idle threats of sending all of “your kids” to public school, we are tired of hearing it. Put up or shut up.

  27. Scoop-? why was the comment regarding (moderated) taken out of my comment? did it hit too close to home? We all know what REALLY goes on and not posting the comment isn’t changing the TRUTH! Post this please, we are all for freedom of speech or is it only your version of free speech that counts?

  28. I’m curious all these public schools get money from the budget..so does it go both ways? what if in Sept all the public school students wanted to register and attend your schools would you allow them? This will probably be deleted anyway

  29. MY DAUGHTER IS ONE OF THE CHILDREN THAT ARE ACTUALLY RECIEVING THERAPY BECAUSE SHE NEEDS IT NOT JUST BEC. I CAN GET AWAY WITH FREE TUITION. HAVING SAID THAT, MY HUSBAND AND I DONT HAVE TAXES TAKEN OUT OF OUR CHECK FOR MY DAUGHTER TO BE SCHOOLD IN A TRAILER!!! I HAVE A RIGHT TO STICK UP FOR MY DAUGHTER AND OTHERS LIKE HER TO SAY THIS IS PLAIN AND SIMPLE WRONG! THEY CANT SAY TO FIND AN ALTERNATIVE LESS THAN 2 WEEKS THE START OF THE SCHOOL YEAR! WE NEED TO BAND TOGETHER AND FIX THIS!!

  30. this is terrible, what are we going to do. My child needs this atmosphere to thrive, and now what will happen to her. Her pediatric neurologist said that this specific program will help her mental health, with children most like her…

  31. so whats everone doing about this the board needs to be strong and not give in i think this is what thay wanted all along……

  32. the BOE or Princeton and West Plainsboro stopped a charter school specilalizing in Mandarian (language) from opening up this year even though they had 150 children signed up and was organized as per all laws simply becuase they empowered the local ordinances not to allow a rezoning of an office building to allow a school threr. There was much opposition as those public school sare NOT Failing.

lakewood is another situation- the public school are failing.

Why cant we open a charter school with Jewish (yiddish/boys evrit/girls) being the guidlines. Yes you will need to have a proper english program. or allow vouchers or full tax credit for private education. ALL THESE IDEAS WOULD HELP OUR LOCAL EDUCATION.

I LIKE THE IDEA OF ENROLLING ALL THE CHILDREN IN LAKEWOOD PUBLIC SCHOOL SYSTEM. WHATCH- EVERY SINGLE CHILD IN LAKEWOOD WOULD BE OFFERED A VOUCHER N MATTER THE INCOME – OTHERWISE WE WOULD BANKRUPT THE STATE WITH SO MAY CHILDREN SWAMPING THE LAKEWOOD PS>

  33. OK EVERYINE_ THEY DARE US-

WE WILL VOTE IN THE RIGHT TO PRAY IN SCHOOL IF YOU WANT > WITH SHACHRIS AND MINCHA.

ALL FOOD WILL NEED TO NE PREPARED KOSHER FOR LUNCH WITH BRAND NEW KITCHENS FOR MILK AND MEAT, WITH KOSHER SUPERVISORS> KCL? OTHER WISE THE CHILDREN WILL NOT EAT AT LEAST THE 90-95% of the student body that will be orthodox jewish.

CLOSED ALL JEWISH HOLIDAYS AND EARLY DISMISSAL ALL FRIDAY IN WINTER.

THIS WILL HAVE TO BE IMPLIMENTED AS 90-95% OF THE STUDENT BODY WILL BE ORTHODOX JEWS,

OH AND THEN WE CAN VOTE IN SPERATE CLASSES OR BUILDINGS FOR zIRLS AND BOYS WITH MEN TEACHING BOYS AND WOMEN TEACHING GIRLS. AND THIS WOULD ALSO BE GOOD TO STEM THE PROBLEMS OF TEENAGERS GETTING INTO TROUBLE AS CAN BE EXPLAINED LATER.

OH WHAT ELSE COULD WE DO??? WE WILL HAVE THEN EVERY SEAT ON THE BOE?????

WE CAN THEN VOTE IN A DRESS CODE FOR TEACHERS AND STUDENTS??

WE WONT HAVE ANY BUS PROBLEMS, TUITION WILL BE 100 FREE> MORE OF US WILL BE ABLE TO STAY IN KOLLEL LONGER OR GO BACK TO KOLLEL.

PLEASE DONT THREATEN THE ORTHODOX COMMUNITY>
2 school just closed down for a lack of funds and one school has 400 boys. Mnay schools cant even afford to pay their teachers and many parents are stuggling to pay tuition for lack of jobs or major cuts in salary. Trust me it can be a domino effect.

  34. let’s see the parents aren’t sure why their kids school is not up to par there are no details why tiny tots is not up to par and our board of ed just let it go through a week before school starts could someone from board of ed please explain what’s going on we pay too much taxes to allow state to walk over us like this without any explanation.

  35. WHETHER YOU HAVE A BOARD OF ED KID OR YOU DONT THIS IS A VERY SCARY PRECEDENT BEING SET BY LAKEWOOD BOARD OF ED AND STATE BOARD OF ED. I’M SURPRISED MORE PEOPLE AREN’T COMMENTING ON THIS. HAS THE VAAD SAID ANYTHING YET?

  36. dear chesky ( I chose you cuz I remember you posting here once) could you please explain why TT is not up to par? and if you can’t which is prob true because boe voted to keep TT in could you please explain how you decided to rescind the action without getting an explanation for us?

  37. There is no mention about tiny tots closing!!! Not receiving funds just means that the state wont give them money on top of the tuition costs.
which makes them join the many schools and yeshivas who are struggling to stay open. welcome!

  38. What planet do #’s 54 and 55 come from? This is the U.S. where there is separation of church and state – meaning that schools that are run with taxpayers money WIlLL NOT have a religious affiliation!! If you think that public schools will have half day Fridays and all Jewish holidays off you are crazy!!! What makes you think that taxpayer money should be given to YOUR private schools. If you want taxpayer money to pay for your child’s education send your kids to public schools like the rest of the country. Only in Lakewood could you say this and think it will happen!!

  39. #63 I am #55 and #54

who said making a private school with private monies. I said this will be the results if we enroll all our children in the Lakewood Public School System.
The majority will rule and the public schools will have more than a majority of orthodox jewish children. Guess what you will have even more jewish board members than you have now. and no one will show up for school on these days. So the board will be forced to recognize the majority need of the legal tax payers/residents and equal members of the Lakewood Public School System which would be jewish children and adjust the schedule to the majority.

and regards to Charter schools The Mandarian Language Charter school otherwise known as Princeton International School will open next year and Hatikvah Charter School (Hebrew language) is planning on opening this year in NJ. As a matter of fact there is an Arab Language School in the New York Public School System. So YES we could open a special language Yiddish (Jewish German) Speaking or hebrew Speaking charter school funded with public monies. Just like you have spanish taught classes or language classes in charter and public Schools throughout the USA. Try Camden or NYC were principals comunicate in Spanish. its our TAX DOLLARS and they are teaching in SPANISH. If its good for spanish then we will vote in YIDDISHE language classe or classes taught in yiddishe in the public school system if we would join..

  40. To answer #65 – No everyone is entitled to a free education – but in the public school system – most people who choose to send their children to private schools pay for it. Why not in Lakewood?

  41. the public schools are failing because of all the illegal immigrants that are brought in to work in lakewood homes and businesses. stop complaining , you are the cause. if you need a school. shell out the bucks. instead of giving to a knock on the door, use the money to build a school you want your kids to go to.
