Education and practice requirements would be expanded for young drivers under a bill introduced in the state Assembly, though the proposal is silent on any changes to the Kyleigh’s Law decal rules. Drivers under the age of 18 applying for learner’s or examination permits would first be required to have a parent or guardian attend an orientation program, according to the legislation proposed by Assemblyman John Wisniewski, D-Middlesex.
Many high schools already have such orientation programs in place but the bill widens the education requirement to cover all young drivers, said Cathleen Lewis, public affairs and government relations director of AAA New Jersey.
The bill also revises practice-hour requirements for new drivers under the age of 21.
“A new driver can’t have too much preparation,” Wisniewski said at a press conference marking National Teen Driver Safety Week. “I think we take driving for granted, but the reality is you’re controlling two tons of steel at 60 mph.” Read full story in Daily Record.
I am so glad I got my license before this bill was passed.
How about new drivers who are over the age of 18. An inexperienced driver of any age also “can’t have too much preparation”…
feww i just got my permit!!!!
On an unrelated note, new NJ drivers beware. If you get four points in the first two years of your license you must attend a probationary drivers program and you are on probation for the next year. That means if you get a points violation in the next year your license gets suspended
