Torah Umesorah Shabbaton Retreat Funding Approved

Jan 28 2011 1:02 pm

torah umesorahAt today’s Board of Education meeting, the $112,000 Torah Umesorah Shabbaton Retreat has been approved. The money, federal funds, are earmarked for children’s remedial services. The funds may be used for teachers to become better teachers and to learn new techniques. Some funds must be used for this type of Professional Development, as it is called.

Initially, there were differing opinions amongst the Mechanchim over whether or not the money can be put to better use, namely the children. As such, the issue was tabled until further investigation can be done.

However, after the Board researched the issue and being assured publicly by Rabbi Aron Gabioff that no religous content will be included in the program, the Board allowed the program to go through.

The approval is contingent on a signed affidavit which is to be handed in by 5:00 p.m. on Monday. TLS.

Being as this is federal money, will any of the public school teachers be going? Just wondering.

i can understand that rabbeim need a break(AS WE ALL DO)but if the money can be channeled to benefit the children directly wouldnt that take precedence over funding a weekend getaway for rebbaim?

As one who has benefited greatly from the tremendous chizuk offered at past Torah Umesorah conventions, I question the honesty in having the taxpayer foot this bill.
Chizuk while great should be paid for by private donors. As to teaching technique, use the grants towards in-service days.

This is so painful for me as a parent, because although I want my child to have more educated and more relaxed teachers, I am deeply concerned because my children aren’t getting their desperately needed tutoring assistance due to what the principal has explained is a “lack of funds.”

I don’t want my children to fall through the cracks because the funds that should have been going towards their individualized needs wasn’t there because it was instead spent on a weekend “Retreat.” :(
