Democrats Criticize Gov’s 10% Income Tax Reduction Plan

[CHART & VIDEOS] In his State of the State address today, Gov. Chris Christie proposed a 10 percent reduction in state income for all brackets, across the board. (See video below). But Democrats were quick to criticize the motion. Assembly Majority Leader Lou Greenwald (D-Camden) released the following statement: “Let’s be clear about this – Gov. Christie’s income tax plan may sound nice, but it would save a family earning $50,000 per year just $80.50 and a family earning $100,000 per year just $275, all while a millionaires get a $7,265.75 tax break.

“Under this tax cut, middle-class families don’t save enough for a week’s worth of groceries, while millionaires save enough to go on an exotic vacation”, Greenwald said.

“The governor is once again missing the point. He continues to focus on tax breaks for the rich while middle-class families struggle with the highest property taxes in the nation. If the governor wants to cut a tax, let’s focus on finding a way to chop property taxes by 10 percent.”

Greenwald added, “Still, we will review any plan the governor puts forth, but it must be a plan and not a sound bite. Does he plan to take the money from schools to pay for his tax cut? Does he plan to let property taxes increase even more? We need to see a real plan, not political theater.

“Democrats will be focusing on continued way to combat property taxes and restore the property tax relief cut by this governor. He should join us in this effort.”

Assembly speaker Sheila Oliver also criticized the Governor’s idea, (See video) and said the cuts would benefit the wealthy, while the poor continued to suffer.

Assembly Republican Leader Jon Bramnick, R-Union, issued the following statement on Governor Christie’s State of the State address:

“New Jersey’s outlook has improved dramatically over the past two years and we’re not finished making New Jersey affordable for families and competitive for jobs.”

“Governor Christie and the bipartisan Legislature have begun to control property taxes and grow private-sector jobs.”

“The Governor’s proposed tax cut for every New Jersey taxpayer represents the next step make New Jersey more affordable for families and competitive for new jobs. This is relief taxpayers can count on because Governor Christie doesn’t make promises he doesn’t intend to keep.”

“We have had historic successes over the past two years and I look forward to working with my colleagues across the aisle to deliver more tax relief, create more jobs and complete New Jersey’s comeback.” TLS.

  1. What are the democrats doing? They are complaining about a tax cut? Where is their proposal? These people are absurd! Shela Olver has done NOTHING to help this state.

  2. The Democrats are screaming because now they can’t spend it, but wait they will find a way to raise taxes and blame the Republicans for the tax increase. How dare the Republicans give back money to the people that paid into it, the Democrats want to give it to the illegals.

  3. “…10 percent reduction in state income for all brackets…”

OK, so everyone who pays income taxes gets 10% knocked off the bill. And what about the thousands of people, mostly senior citizens, who do not make enough money to pay taxes? They still have the same bills to pay as everyone else but they do not get any money back. Therefore, the cost of living goes up for them.

  4. Anon –

If they don’t make enough to pay taxes…… that means they don’t pay taxes in the first place! Lucky them! The rest of us who do pay taxes, pay through our noses to support those who don’t pay taxes.

All we’re asking for is a reduction in the amount of money the government takes from us.

Those who haven’t paid the government in the first place, obviously, have no reason to expect any reduction.

You can’t reduce -0- any lower.

I will try to give you an example. Let’s see if you’re smart enough to understand:

Jack and Bob go to the store for drinks. Jack is wealthy and Bob is poor, so Jack offers his friend Bob to pay for his drinks. Bob drinks $50 worth, and Jack drinks $50 worth. Together the bill comes to $100. Jack pulls out a crisp $100 bill and hands it to the bartender, and tells him, “I am paying for my bill, and for good buddy Bob’s bill.”

But then, the bartender tells Jack: “We’re having a huge sale tonight. Everything is 10% off. Your bill is just $90.

So Jack hands the bartender the crisp $100 bill, and receives $10 change, bringing the entire tab to just $90.

Just then, Bob opens his mouth: “That’s not fair! You gave Jack $10 back because he is rich. I am poor, why should I lose out? I also want $10 back”

And that, my friends, is what liberalism and socialism is all about.

This poor person couldn’t contemplate that he doesn’t deserve the $10 back because IT WAS NEVER HIS MONEY IN THE FIRST PLACE.

If you don’t pay taxes, why should the government give you a refund on something YOU NEVER PAID??????

  5. I found a way to get an 80% reduction on my property taxes. I left New Jersey. I love coming here to see what I happily left behind. My advise, leave NJ. There is no excuse that a state that collects over hundreds of dollars PER SECOND on over 110 toll plazas thru out the state not to mention insanely high property taxes, DMV fes and one of the largest shipping ports in the world finds a way to cry poor. Get a calculator and do the math. Just ONE Turnpike exit handles over 50,000 cars per day according to the state. The Parkway handles over 750,000 cars a day and up to 1.5 million on major holidays paying an average of $1.75 per car on the Parkway and $3.60 on the Turnpike which handles up to 560,000 cars AND trucks per day. Not to mention that most of those motorists are traveling 2 ways each day thus DOUBLING these figures. Also, trucks pay up to 5 times more than cars. This my friends is the biggest ponzi scheme ever invented. The money goes to greased up contracts for no bid work and paying for an administration to “Collect” said tolls when its all been computerized and no longer even requires even a 10th of the the workforce that is still employes. EZCASH…in someones pocket.

  6. Skeet. Your logic is not correct. It is true that government taxes and spending needs to be cut. It is also true that NJ has the highest property taxes in the nation. However, your complaints about toll collection is simply incorrect.

  7. I thought we were broke?

If you are having trouble paying your bills, you don’t reduce the hours you work and cut your income. Sure lay off half of the government workers, cut out welfare etc etc, thats all fine and good, but you don’t purposely cut your income stream until your debt is paid in full.

  8. The democrats are mad because its less money they can blow on crony capitalism, funneling money towards abbot districts to keep getting reelected, and other personal gains.

Sheila Oliver is the same (moderated) who spent tax dollars by wasting time proposing a bill that would require license plates for bicycles. She is the exact reason why our government needs a serious over-haul: to get these career-politicians out of office, and back into actually having to work for a pay-check. these wastes of time and space dont do anything positive in office, and only end up using 40 paid hours per week, but other resources that could be used positively towards societal progress.

  9. Every time taxes are cut, the economy picks up, and the state gets MORE money in tax revenues, because people are making MORE money (profits).

Ask anyone who runs a business. You cut their taxes, they will spend and invest more and hire more people. NET RESULT: More people have jobs, less government spending on welfare, less government spending on unemployment, more profits and thus more income taxes for government.

    It always works.

But the states that continue to tax very high, are the ones that continue to have budget deficits. Working and wealthy people (those who pay taxes) are leaving those states in droves. See California for perfect example.

  10. “…Sheila Oliver is the same (moderated) who spent tax dollars by wasting time proposing a bill that would require license plates for bicycles…”

So what’s wrong with that? Lakewood had that law years ago. And I still have the Lakewood Bicycle License Plate to prove it so don’t say I’m wrong. However, Lakewood never enforced that law. Think of all the money the town would make if they were to enforce that law now.

  11. #11 Anonymous, i also have memorabilia from my grandparents russian communist days when they were required to carry their passports with them 24/7 containing WORK STAMPS stating where they worked.

-you might enjoy big brother, but 99% of people dont.
bicycles SHOULD NOT be under some state registration law. its absolutely ludicrous. in your mind we should register our shoes/skate boards/roller skates/scooters/etc too?

  12. Ask anyone who runs a business. You cut their taxes, they will spend and invest more and hire more people.

Lo shada inesh zuzah b’cdey-No one throws out money and starts investing and hiring people just because their taxes are lower.

  13. Really?
The Democrats are mad because a millionaire is going to get more back than the common folk? Let’s see, the last time I figured this out if someone with a larger income than I pays $5000. in income tax and I only pay $500, and we both get 10% back then. according to my trusty, rusty math, he’s gonna get more money. Maybe someone should inform the Demos about this well known fact?
Trouble is, both parties are a joke. Christie goes after teachers, public unions, targets he knows will get him on voter’s good side and refuses to make meaningful cuts in programs that can cost him these votes. They’re all looking out for themselves and WE KEEP VOTING THEM BACK IN.
