N.J. Dems Might Have Enough Votes In State Senate To Approve Same-Gender Marriage

As state lawmakers gathered Tuesday to usher in a new session with their high hopes and soaring phrases, an informal survey showed that a majority of senators support the idea of same-gender marriage, though some said they wanted to review the details of newly proposed legislation.

And although the pieces appear to be falling into place in the Senate for the approval of same-gender marriage, Democrats have not cobbled together the two-thirds majority necessary to overcome a likely veto by Christie.

The survey of lawmakers lining up behind the same-gender measure review showed the measure poised for passage in the Senate, where it failed two years ago.

“It is a disgrace — a disgrace — that we deny civil rights to our residents,” Senate Majority Leader Loretta Weinberg (D-Bergen), a sponsor, said in a speech marking the reorganization of the Senate Tuesday. “However long I am in this position, however long the feisty is still within me, the fight for marriage equality will be front and center.”

To become law, the measure must also pass the Assembly and get by the governor. Christie could outright veto it, sign it — which he has said he will not do — or, as some Democrats hope, do nothing for 45 days and simply allow it to become law without his signature. Read more in Star Ledger.

  1. Yes, the most important problem we have to face in NJ is same gender marriage………….
    Remember, no matter how you stand on this issue, is this the state’s #1 priority?
    And WE ALL keep voting these clowns back in again and again!!??

  2. Christie will never let this become Law, if hes able to veto it he will, hes not some lame guy who will sit around and let it happen if he does he know his political carrier is over
