School Board Rescinds ‘K Through 8’ Decision Which Eliminated Middle School

PHOTOS & VIDEO [UPDATED 8:05 AM] The Board Of Education this evening voted to rescind the K through 8 combination after hundreds turned out to protest the move approved by the board last meeting.

Angry middle-school parents and students protested and got up to speak during the public portion of the meeting asking the board to keep the schools seperate for the benefit of the younger students.

One of those protesting the move and asking the board to rescind their vote, was BOE Candidate Aasim Johnson.

After listening to the parents and students speak, the Superintendent, Ms. Lydia Silva said she will no longer recommend K-8, and the redistricting was unanimously rescinded until they could further research the issue in the coming months. TLS.

  1. Many arguments can be for or against this concept.

My concern was that the opportunity to have courses to challenge those with hopes to get into a college, will not be available, in a K-8 setting. To be able to take calculus as a senior in high school, one needs the opportunity to take algebra as an 8th grader. Would that be possible with fewer 8 graders up to that challenge in a K-8 school? I am glad the board rescinded their decision.

  2. The board reacted last night to the community who attends our public schools. The truth is the board previously voted under the superintendents advise to move our public schools to K-8. The move might be a great idea but before such an undertaking the public and board members owe it to the children to make sure this is the best course for the children. We all heard shocking horror stories what goes on in the schools. Folks these things happen every day in most inner city and urbn school districts. One comment actually from a student moving ahead with a program of K-5 in the elementary schools and 6-8 in the middle schools makes sense. A stronger public school system would make a stronger lakewood, we it’s our duty to try to make this happen

  3. I don’t understand how it makes a difference. In my days,, there was no separate middle school. We learned Algebra in 9th grade and calculus in 12th grade. 7th and 8th grades had some of the same teachers as the high school had. The difference between grades1-6 and 7-8, was that we had only one teacher for 1-6 and departmental for 7-8, just like in high school. Of course, we shared the same building. (this was in a small yeshiva)

  4. As I watched the video, i found it really disrespectful the way the board members acted, laughing, speaking and waving for a photo op., A young man who seems to care about the school district should have been shown a bit more respect.

  5. #7, your missing the whole point. You can compare private school’s to the public schools. The enviroment is totally different, boys and girls in one class and if you were at the meeting last night you would have heard concerns of the parents. One of the public schools biggest problems is members of the school board have no idea waht really goes on in the public schools. There decisions are based upon there knowledge of the private school system

  6. this is terrible. I wouldnt want me 3ard grade daughter in the same school as 6 7 8 ect. lakewood has problems with the kids as it is. These kids are going to be growing up to soon. Lakewood is out of control between the schools the car accidents and shootings. Lets get it together people.

  7. does anyone really think the BOE will settle a contract with the unions?, NO
Why do you think it’s taken so long to get the right company to repair the middle school roof?
No one is thinking about the children in the public schools except a board member or two. Ms. Miccio pretends to be in favor of the public schools but she is really not.

  8. Aasim Johnson for Township Committee!
That young man really has a good head on his shoulders and has the potential to be a great leader

  9. Keep up the pressure on this BOE, they could care less about the public school system. The private schools should be required to live by the same rules that they pass for public school then you would see this nonsense stop!!!!!

  10. Hey BOE how about a contract with the teachers, its been years that they have not had one. Wait till you get the bill for all the back pay you will owe them, bet our taxes will go sky high and for no reason other than you did NOT do your job and get a contract for the teachers…..

    agree

    agree

  13. This is the BOE of Lakewood? Disrespectful, lacking professional decorum, and clearly divided according to vested interest lines. Watching people answering phones, talking through the speaker, laughing, holding conversations in little groups–was a disgustingly obvious display of their LACK of respect for the public education system that USED to be a thriving, highly prized system in the state! This was not a show of “leadership” in any sense of the word. Asking the young man what HIS solution is to the problem was offensive and an obvious attempt to discredit his testimony–which he had clearly stated he come with several times before! The scene was like a circus of bad behavior by the so-called leadership! Ugly at best. But then, I’ve been seeing a lot of bad behavior and decision making coming out of Lakewood these days. Anti-inclusive from the streets to the ruination of the public education system. This is more than sad. It is disgusting!

  14. To Shocked says:
I agree 100 %, The video is more than enough proof of the unprofessional manner which this board runs its meeting, totally disrespectful to those who attend
