2 Homeless Men Escape Tent Fire Uninjured

VIDEO: Two homeless men are lucky to be alive today after the tent they shared went up in flames. At about 12AM, a tent at the homeless camp at Hurley Avenue & Cedarbridge Avenue caught fire, but the father and son who lived there managed to escape unharmed just before the fire consumed the tent and its contents.

The fire department quickly extinguished the fire, which officials say may have started from a candle.

EMS transported one of the men to Kimball Medical Center after complaining of chest pains. TLS-55/TLS-60/TLS-CCP.

Tell me this is normal. Why do our emergency responders have to put them self’s in harms way when responding to unsafe conditions. If this was a building with a bad support beam we wouldn’t let them occupy the building so why do we let them occupy these unsafe living condition’s someone put a stop to this.

  • INSANITY says:

STOP THE INSANITY ALREADY! WHY DO WE HAVE TO CARE FOR PEOPLE WHO DON’T CARE FOR THEMSELVES! (& DON’T TELL ME THE SOB STORY ‘THEY HAVE NO OTHER OPTIONS’, YES THEY DO!, MANY OPTIONS HAVE BEEN OFFERED TO THEM, & THEY DECLINE IT! THEY WANT TO BE A MENACE TO SOCIETY, & GET ALL THE ATTENTION & PUBLICITY, & TAKE AWAY FROM ALL THE HONEST TAXPAYERS TAXES, WITHOUT THEM PAYING ANYTHING, BUT USING ALL OUR RESOURCES!)
ENOUGH IS ENOUGH! SOMEONE DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT!

  • know it all says:

They are NOT homeless! They WILFULLY choose to live this way. (Moderated)

  • Anonymous says:

Thank goodness everyone made it out okay.

  • someone says says:

if you could figure something out, tell us. until then they will live in a tent in the woods, and the township will take care of them as always. i could not agree with you more. something must be done.

  • my 2 cents says:

I think I can understand why they want to live in tent city. It’s because there they have their independence. If they were sent to a shelter or a motel etc. they would have to follow certain rules and regulations. I am not saying they’re right, but, I see their point.

  • Anon says:

what shelter is there for them? ocean county deals with the homeless situation by shipping them off to other counties and having them deal with it. there needs to be a shelter built in this county for these people. and to insanity- what options have been offered and how do you know they have been turned down? have you actually spoken to any other the people that live in the city or do you get your information from others as hateful as you? any people living in the encampment that are able to get any kind of assistance take it. a lot of people are not able to get any help and not because of drug or alcohol abuse- just to stave that ridiculous excuse off. if you want to start spewing venomous hate, at least know the facts.

  • ?? says:

and now they’re homeless once again

  • huh says:

we’ll learn when we have a real forest fire and serious damage and danger

  • psycologist says:

maybe they shouldnt put it out. let them evacuate the whole area. the fire dept, doesnt have to risk their lives for people choosing to live in hazardous conditions. by the way 90 percent of these people choose top live this way. they are not homeless. its like a hippy movement. they think its fun. its like getting away from society. they feel they have no legal boundaries.

  • Chaim Yankel says:

I think they were matzoh baking…maybe early biur chametz w/o an approved license.
If they were doing biur chametz w/o a license then it would be grounds for removal of the whole camp as it would be a hazard or maybe they should issue them a license so they could stay.

    We need an investigation.

Yup that is the way 2 do it.

  • Daas Torah says:

How many people need to be burnt or killed before Lakewood closes down tent city?

  • Wow says:

To psycologist: ” 90 persent chose to live this way” Where did you get this number. I do not think anyone believes you are a real “PSYCHOLOGIST” since you did not even spell it correctly

  • Rachel says:

to #7, you are 100% correct. Ocean county sends them down to AC for their shelter, AC offers people bus tickets back to the ctate they originated from if possible but that doesnt give them a job or a home it just gets them out of Jersey so they feel better about the situation. The state doesnt have the money to handle the homeless peple the ay they used to, by putting them up in motels through seaside heights and lower toms river or even in brick, so they turn to tent citys; and by the way Lakewood is not the only town who has it but you are the only ones who whine and moan over it. You act like they arent human beings in need of help….they havent been offered any other solutions #2 because there aren’t any to offer them. Go talk to them, interview them and Rev Brigham and see what is offered and then maybe you can stop spewing such stupidity. #10, there is no way in h@## that you are a psychologist because someone in that field would never spew such things as let it all burn down and that they choose to live like this, its like a hippy movement. They are human beings down on their luck, not are addicted to drugs, some live in their cars, some dont have that luxory an dlive in a tent. All of you Lakewoodians should be ashamed of your selfs, such hatred and for what?

  • Rachel says:

oh and just so we are clear, I lived in Lakewood for 10 years, my kids went through the schools there, my dad and husband were fire fighters there and my dad was raised in twn as a young child and my grandfather was an orthodox rabbi who was hit by a car and killed in Oct 1979 while crossing rt 9 infront of the capitol hotel, so keep your opinions of you dont live here you dont know to yourselves because I do. I still come there on a weekly basis, friends and family live there.

  • anon says:

I’m slightly confused about this ever growing tent city. It seems to be growing by the day! Are these people allowed to remain there because of humanitarin reasons or is there a legal reason?

  • In the know says:

To # 16: Lakewodd sued the residents of tent city last year and the entire matter is in the hands of the Ocean County Court. The Judge has appointed a Mediator to work with both sides to come up with an appropiate solution.

To Everyone: This was not a fire at Tent City. This location had two tents where a father and son lived. Not sure how anyone could call this a “Tent City”. After all the recent house fires in Lakewood especially after two house fires in one day last week, I am more concerned about my carelees neighbors setting their house on fire and burning my house down than I am with someone at Tent City starting a fire.

  • nosy lkwd says:

    Tent city has to go

  • Lkwd says:

Maybe there wouldn’t be so many homeless if people stopped buying and tearing down homes these people lived in. Many don’t have anywhere eles to go besides in a tent.

  • Bill Hobday says:

    So where is the mediator?
    So where is the court?
So where is the Township Committee?
They need to find a remedy on behalf of all of mankind.

The mediator must offer suggestions that may or may not be acceptable to all.

The Court needs to find the squatters and representatives in contempt of the court order to not expand.

The Township needs to file an action with the court to show cause why the representatives are not in compliance with the court order.

Perhaps the Township needs to seek damages for the use of scarce resources, emergency and otherwise, in an effort to bring Ocean County and the State of New Jersey to the bargaining table.

  • arrrrr!!! says:

YES ! TENT CITY HAS TO GO! (THEY EVEN HAVE A WELCOME SIGN AT CLOVER AND CEDAR BRIDGE AND SO MANY NEW TENTS! ENUF IS ENUFFF!)

  • Anonymous says:

Everyone- please reread the article. The fire happened by the railroad tracks- NOT at tent city!!

  • ABC says:

    Close down tent city!

  • Anonymous says:

Everyone should leave those people alone. There r done on there luck. There is no place for them to go. I went there one to give thwm a few things. There were all nice people. Just because they dnt live in a joise or an apartment does not mean that they r not people.. They should b treated as such. al of u that thinks that tent city should b shut down should (moderated). U guys better pray that I dont go homeless.

  • caring says:

22- railroad tracks are part of tent city.

  • In the know says:

25: Railroad tracks are not part of Tent City. Tent City is at the end of Clover street. There are no railroad tracks there. This fire occurred directly behind the SIngin Gas Station. There were only two tents and two people living there.

  • Observer says:

I think it is sad to see so little compassion for this father and son. I don’t like, nor advocate people living in tents-but the reality is, these two have lost all their worldly possessions that were inside what they called “home.” It may behoove others to look at him/herself and thank G-D that you are not in that kind of situation.

  • d sank says:

does the fire dept go by fire codes enforcement,
