Township Holds Lottery For Affordable Housing Units

PHOTOS & VIDEO [RESULTS BELOW – UPDATED 8:35 PM] A public lottery to determine who is eligible to purchase the newly constructed three- and four-bedroom affordable – housing units, took place in the auditorium of the Municipal Building this evening.

There are a total of 58 affordable housing units.

Ervin Oross, the community development director of Lakewood and the president of Rehabco, the company that runs housing and community development programs, said that those individuals who had completed applications for this phase of affordable housing received a letter with a lottery ball number in it. Oross said, “The call for applications was advertised in all the media, including the Hispanic newspapers so everyone would have an equal opportunity to apply for the affordable housing units. We received 1,000 applications for three- and four-bedroom units. It looks as though we have 600 applications for the four-bedroom units and 300 for the three-bedroom units.”

In attendance, was the Director of Economic Development Steven Reinman, Ed Seiger of the Tax Office, Committeeman Ray Coles, Shmuel Lefkowitz, Yisroel Friedman, Ervin Oross, and Deputy Mayor Albert Akerman, who was there in place of the Mayor.

“The Mayor said he’s particularly happy with the process of a lottery, because that way everything is above water and there’s no room for any claims of corruption”, Akerman said before Committeeman Ray Coles mixed the balls.

A Bingo cage containing wooden bingo balls automatically picked the numbered balls and shot them out. The winners will now be carefully screened to make sure they meet all criteria to own an affordable housing unit. Winners who were not present, will be notified of their selection by mail.

  1. Thanks for posting!! I’m on there in the 70’s for a 3 bedroom. I guess that means 55 people have to drop out for me to get one??

I didn’t realize there were so few 3 bedroom houses!

  2. I was in the lottery for a 4 bedroom but the picked my # by the 3bedrooms in the 70’s(no chance) some is wrong! As in is obvious that was not able to win the 4 bedroom any more even thought that’s what I requested

  3. i dont think they put you in the wrong raffle. it seems like each lottery (3 bedroom and 4 bedroom) each had their own sets of numbers – meaning that somebody else who is in the 3 bedrrom raffle has the same number as you

  4. I would like to see a copy of the advertisement in spanish and mainstream avenues for this opportunity, I would really hope it wasnt some small blurb on the back of a newspaper as opposed to a massive ad in the jewish papers.

  5. why so negative? There were ads in every local circular and they were each full pages.
And since the language of this country is English, they really do not have an obligation to translate it into any other language.

  6. To logger: the ad was placed by an independent 3rd party NOT JEWISH- there I said it- company- the same guy who ran the lottery and announced the names. It was a sizeable ad not a blurb. Are you aware that besides what it says in the article, the applications were dropped off at area churches, libraries, announcements and presentations were made at STEPS meetings (90 percent minorities), etc…

  7. So confused! The letter I received in the mail said there would be 30 3 bedroom houses with 60 numbers drawn…guess theres only 16 to be won…like how these things change last minute…

  8. Must be exciting for those that entered this lottery, hope you win!

I am just glad I live in a small, out of town Frum community, where a beautiful 4br 2ba home sells for under $90k. And here people are scrambling to win the chance to pay $180-$250 for an “affordable” home. Guess thats the price you pay to live in a big “city”!

  9. I see that Ed Seeger the tax assessor was there. He is a gr8 person and a wonderful edition to Lakewood. Wishing him only good! Keep up the gr8 profesional work!
