Statement Of Ocean County Prosecutor On Child’s Death

Ocean County Prosecutor Marlene Lynch Ford released the following statement to TLS in connection with an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of a two year old child today: “At approximately 4:49 PM today, Lakewood Police were contacted by a Lakewood woman, Marina Matias, who reported that she could not find her two year old child, “J.C.”. Police and emergency personnel were immediately dispatched to East Spruce Street in Lakewood, and conducted a hunt for the missing child.

“The search teams found a small approximately 3 foot wide hole in the yard, apparently to a septic tank, and called in the Lakewood Township Public Works Department to pump out the water in the tank. At approximately 7:30 PM, the water level had been dropped and police and emergency personnel unfortunately made visual observation of the body of a child in that tank.

“At this time, emergency crews are working to carefully remove the body from the tank. The family has been informed and is understandably distraught over this turn of events. Dr. Brodsky of the Ocean County Medical Examiner’s Office is on the scene for the purposes of examining the body. At this time no pronouncement has been made subject to the ability of Dr. Brodsky to make a medical examination.

“The body is believed to be the child reported missing, although at this time that identification has not been made. The missing child, 2 years old, had been playing in the yard with her four siblings when she apparently fell down the hole into the septic tank.

“We all join in expressing our deep condolences to the family of this child, and I ask the media to be respectful of their privacy at this time.”

The investigation of this death will be conducted by the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office, lead investigator Detective Sergeant Carlos Trujillotovar, together with the Lakewood Township Police Department. Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact Sgt. Trujillotovar at 732-929-2027. TLS.
