Efforts To Free Jacob Ostreicher Intensify

FreeJacobNow.com is looking to obtain 25,000 signatures in a petition to the President in hopes of securing the release of Jacob Ostreicher, who has been held in a foreign prison, without any charges against him. (See ABC report here).

The following is from FreeJacobnow.com.

“Jacob Ostreicher is a 53 year old American citizen, born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. He and his wife Miriam raised five children and are blessed with 11 grandchildren. Scrupulous in his business affairs, Jacob had a successful career built on a reputation of integrity and for the compassionate treatment of his workers.

Today, Jacob is languishing in a jail in Bolivia where he is at the mercy of prison gangs who have the run of the notorious Palmasola Prison. There are no guards inside the prison where the most hardened criminals make and enforce the rules. Observers report that there is an average of one “suicide” per month – the term used by officials there for inside murders.

Why is this American citizen wasting away (he has lost 60 lbs.), living in fear among these killers and drug lords? It is because he Invested in land in Bolivia and managed a rice business whose success caught the eye of powerful government officials. They used deception to arrest him and have now been holding him without trial for more than eleven months, while they move to strip him of his assets.

His innocence is documented. His elderly parents and young grandchildren are distraught. His family is torn apart. He is in real danger.”

  1. I don’t understand. How is it that an American is being held in prison in another country & he is not getting any representation from U.S. officials nor any assistance? At the very least, can’t the American Consulate intervene on his behalf?

  2. I urge the oilem to contact the local politicians and urge them to intervene on his behalf,u can contact the politicians through the free ostreicher website.
    Thank you

  3. This is not just for the jewish community, rather for all caring human beings.Sign the petition for a fellow American citizen in a foreign prison being held without charges.
I saw this on TV before i saw it here.heartbreaking!
    EVERYONE sign the petition.

  4. Maybe no one in the government cares because he is Jewish or because it’s not important enough in American politics to bother with him. I’m not saying that’s the way it should be, I’m saying don’t count on Uncle Sam to be someone’s saviour. We have to count on Hashem. We should all be saying Tehilim for him, besides signing the petition, which I did already last week.

  5. To ‘goy in Lakewood’ you are what makes this country so great. A caring individual who shows compassion to all. We salute you!

  6. I will keep him and his family in my prayers hoping that he has the strength to endure this unnesesary punishment and that he will be reunited with his family soon.

  7. I have been following this story and I can’t understand why we are not shipping all of Lakewood to stand in front of the Bolivian mission and the State dept. until he is freed. This is a classic case of Pidyon Shivoium. He is being held by a lawless entity for no reason (probably for ransom) . He didn’t violate any laws and he was able to convince even mainstream media (that have no problem believing that a frum jew is drug smuggler) that he is innocent.
    Where are his brothers, us?

  9. Why doesn’t the petition have yet 50,000+ signatures? Please, everyone, take 1 minute of your time to sign. The family doesn’t ask for your money, just to sign.

“Lo tamod al dam rayecho”. This is a classic case of pidyom shviim just like in the olden times were people were hijacked for ransom.

  11. This should be treated as a breaking news item and should be at the top of the TLS page until 25,000 signatures are met. This is embarassing already. It should not take more than 24 hrs to get the remaining 20,000 signatures…
Imagine this was your father/grandfather/husband/brother/son/friend/neighbor. Let’s go.

TLS: I implore you to keep this at the top of the site.

  12. the internet is a sofek if it will capture and ruin someones life, but someone in jail where the pidyon for him you suppose to be even mechallel shabbos for his pidyon,a vadai gomur WHERE are the ASIFAS NOW FOR HIM?

  13. I think the reason that many people have not signed the petition is because the site, like alot of thing in our government, is screwed up. I created an account & logged in, but there is no way to get back into the page that will allow me to sign the petition.
Can someone please list clear & concise instructions for us dimwits out here?
