VIDEO: The very mild winter has paved the way for a stronger showing by at least one of the annoyances of summer: poison ivy. Abc27’s Garden Guru, Kathy Quarles, said weeds and other undesirableplants got a good start because of the warmer weather.
“Everything is worse this year as far as weeds and things that you don’t desire growing,” Quarles said. “It’s because the season is so early. We had such an early, early start with the warm weather and everything took off early.”
Quarles recommends learning what poison ivy looks like and eradicating the plant if it’s on your property. The best way to do that is through an herbicide that kills poison ivy.
“The problem is that most poison ivy creeps on desirable things,” Quarles said. “Most of the sprays are non-selective, meaning whatever you spray, it’s going to kill whatever is wrapped on the poison ivy.”
If you come in contact with poison ivy, the FDA suggests you clean the area with rubbing alcohol within 10 minutes. They suggest you then wash it with water only, because soap can spread the oil around and make the reaction worse. You can then take a warm shower and wash with soap. ABC.
