A three-car fatal accident on Route 88 this morning appears to have been caused by icy road conditions, Brick Police say. Stephen D. Jackson, 25, from Brick, was identified by police as the deceased.

Police say a driver had made a right turn from Brentwood Avenue and was proceeding west on Route 88, when Jackson was traveling east on Route 88 in the area of Pinewood Park.

Shortly after making the turn onto Route 88, the driver of westbound vehicle began to lose control of her vehicle on the icy roadway. Her vehicle began to rotate counter-clockwise and crossed the center roadway lines and into the oncoming eastbound lane, crashing into Jackson. The vehicle then continued and crashed into another vehicle driving behind Jackson, police say. Jackson’s vehicle came to a final rest in the eastbound shoulder after a secondary impact with a utility pole in front of Olympic Gardens. The other vehicle came to final rest after crashing into a wooded embankment.

Officers Robert Koch and Glenn Turner from Brick Township Police Department were the first arriving units on scene. Several other units later arrived to assist, along with Brick Township Police Department’s EMS and MONOC Paramedics. Jackson succumbed to his injuries at the scene, police say.

The Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office, Medical Examiner and the Ocean County Sheriff’s Department CIU investigated the accident.

The east and westbound lanes of State Highway 88 were closed for approximately 3-1/2 hours due to the investigation. The Lakewood Police Department and the NJ Department of Transportation assisted with the detours at Chambers Bridge / Lanes Mill Roads and at Brentwood Avenue.

Officer’s Jay Lampiasi, Scott Dierking and Sergeant David G. Bedrosian of the Brick Township Police Department’s Traffic Safety Unit responded and are conducting the crash investigation.

The cause of the crash is still pending further investigation, but at this time police say it appears that the icy road conditions may have contributed to the crash.
