BOE: 90 Minute Delay in Public School Opening; Public and Non-Public Transportation Affected

The Transportation Department’s Director Gus Kakovis has notified TLS that due to downed wires and debris  blocking many streets, there will be a 90 minuted delayed opening this morning for the public schools.

The recommendation came from the Police Department, Gus says.

Parents of Private Schools should check with their schools for their opening schedule.

  1. Disgusting of them to do this arbitrarily without letting anyone know! Not everyone reads the scoop first thing in the morning! It’s really mind bogging what this BOE gets away with.

  2. There was no notification to anyone about a delay opening and kids were standing outside waiting for buses. What happened to the automated phone call to parents when there is a delay or closing. By the time it was posted here it was too late.

  3. People like showing authority. Thousands of cars on the streets instead causing traffic and saftey as kids getting dropped off near schools walking through traffic.

  5. If there were downed wires, and trees, then why would it be safe for us parents to drive if its too dangerous for the buses to drive!! Just wondering!!

  6. Why would there be thousands of cars on the road because of a delayed opening? It doesn’t mean no buses, it just means they are coming at a later time.

  7. To all those who have trouble understanding why the buses are not running and complaining that this will cause too much road traffic, the boe has a responsibility for the safety of the children. if the police recommend to postpone or not run the buses, as responsible board members they should heed the advice of the lpd. every parent will make their own decision if they feel it is safe for them to drive their child and if most parents feel that it is safe for them to drive and there are traffic jams that does not put the boe at fault in any way for doing the right thing.

  8. Lakewood school did call to say there’s a 90 minute delay. And parents don’t have to drive the busses still came just 90 minutes later.

  9. just sat in 45 minutes of traffic taking my kids to school. There wasnt a twig on the road!!!
downed wires?? exactly, street poles all over the place, cars turned upside down in middle of the road, live wires burning on every corner!! it looked like Armageddon!!

  10. I was out at 7am this morning. I saw lots of police on the southbound side of Route 9 by James street. I didnt get close enough to see why. I do think that cancelling transportation is more of a sakana today…absolutely noone was happy about it and noone was driving with any amount of patience or caution.

  11. parents have to work they can not wait home an extra 90 minutes on a moments notice. If it is safe to drive they will take their kids to school. The BOE should have known there is a possibility of downed wires do to the impending winds and should have notified schools yesterday about possible cancelations.

  12. i drove 2 of my kids and didn’t see a trees or wires down. All I saw was tons of traffic and many drivers talking on cells and not paying attention to the road. the drive to my kids school normally takes 15 minutes but turned into 45 minutes headache.

  13. A 90 min delay is a precursor to a total cancellation. The decision whether or not to run buses on any given day must be made at a certain hour, well before most of Lakewood is awake. If a decision is made to run buses then that cannot be reversed. If the safety situation on the ground is questionable at the time the decision needs to be made then the first course of action is to delay transportation rather then flat out cancel. As a result of the first schedule tier being delayed, all subsequent tiers are delayed as well.(including the 9 am run when the sun is shining and everything looks rosey in Lakewood). The blame for all the traffic and inconveniences should be placed squarely on the schools demanding that they MUST start on time. Transportation for the private schools are a part of the big picture and cannot be separated. They need to work together with the BOE.

  14. How come Howell Jackson Brick Toms River all had regular on time transporation today??? Maybe only Lakewood had the storm last night & all of our surrounding towns were speared! Or maybe “only our police department cares for the safety of the children”. Or maybe something else…. Who Knows?!

  15. I did get a call from my sons school telling me that there will be no busing – the funny thing was that while I was getting ready to drive him My son saw his bus just fly down the street – of course since no one was at the stop there was no reason to stop. why were some buses driving around if it isn’t safe? the communication in this town between Bus Drivers/BOE/schools and Parents is ridiculous !!!

  16. Maybe the parents of Private school children don’t like the idea of a delayed opening but I think I would prefere to have my child safe. There are times it is wiser to be safe than sorry. A 90 minute delay will not stop education.

  17. The BOE is finally looking out for the safety of the children, keep up the good work and use 90 minute delays when the weather is bad. You also have staff members that have to travel to Lakewood.

  18. It seems like many people here are blaming the wrong people.

The BOE postponed buses for 45 min. Which means the schools are supposed to start 45 min late.

For some reason all the schools went head and started regular time. When they did that, it became a huge mess bec everyone had to get to school with their own transportation.

Another problem is the notification system of the BOE.

Most parents were unaware of the bus delay. Many schools didn’t even have on their snow number .

    Whens next BOE elections??

  19. Dumb decision. They should be ashamed of themselves. Just looking for excuses not to work. If they worked for me they would be fired on the spot. But since they work for the government there’s no accountability.

  20. Well the BOE messed this one up big time. As parents we should all go to the next BOE meeting and (moderated) the board members for making this bad decision, maybe next time they will get it right!!!!

  21. “Dumb decision. They should be ashamed of themselves. Just looking for excuses not to work. If they worked for me they would be fired on the spot. But since they work for the government there’s no accountability.”
Dumb comment!!! That sums it up.
At a 90 min delay the buses are still obligated to do the entire run regardless whether the school start on time or not. So no one is looking to get away with not working.

  22. am I the only one who got a phone call from the boe at 5:44 AM????? IS THAT NORMAL TO CALL AT 5:44 AM. it got me really scared only to hear about a 90 minute delay

  23. 90 min delay ???? What would that accomplish ??? If it aint safe enough the don’t come @ all and if its safe then y wait ?????????????
