PHOTO: Days after promising to bring a speedy resolution to the contentious Tent City issue, the Mayor and Committeeman Lichtenstien are getting down to business.
Escorted by a Police Officer, Mayor Albert Akerman and Committeeman Lichetnstien visited the homeless encampment this morning to get a first hand update to the ongoing activities taking place at the camp, and a look at the living conditions of about 80 or so residents.
The visit comes ahead of a planned meeting with County.
“We went down ahead of our meeting with the County so we can convey some of the conditions and the growth of Tent City as seen through our own eyes, Mayor Akerman tells TLS. “This is in addition to the other conditions that are obvious from outside Tent City”, says the Mayor.
The Mayor and Committeeman Lichtenstein are expected to meet with the County later this week, in an effor to expedite a resolution to the pressing issue. TLS.

What about the slumlord firetraps that are rented out?? How many fatal fires are we going to have before the township takes steps to make sure rentals are safe?? But no, lets worry about a bunch of people in the woods- not children being killed just to make a buck. Whats wrong with this town?

Why not post everyone’s comments TLS? Its just okay to allow comments saying the entire camp should catch on fire but not one asking for accountability for the slumlord fires?
Tent City is located on environmentally sensitive land with a conservation easement to prohibit any construction or disturbance. Obviously the Homeless do not need to obey our laws.
Since that is the case, we should use that special status to solve the problem. If we give them the land that tent city is on, they could build a casino which would generate revenue which could be used to support their habits and provide for their needs. Hopefully then they would have fireproof tents and safe clean heaters which would not pollute our air. No housing of course because then they would need to be law abiding. Also volunteers would need to pay for and build the casino because it would not be fair to expect the homeless to work.
I hope these people can go to a safer environment cause Tent City is no place for anybody to live. It’s quite sad actually.

Could not BREATHE here last night, there air was so thick it stings ur eyes n is choking when u leave ur house at night here… it’s so unbelievable that this goes on… TENT CITY MUST GO. Inside my house smelled smokey too !

Brian what are you on? Be for real. And everybody in tent city are not all drug addicts and are mentally ill. I understand that tent city should be closed down and a proper shelter be built. But before you stereotype people maybe you should think about other people to stereotype why don’t we just hate everybody who are is different and down on their luck. g

What can we provide for the people of tent city?
These people are not evil! They are grateful for any little scrap they get. Some are Vets! We need a Salvation Army shelter in Ocean County. The poor will be with us forever- lets treat them like human beings.
