BOE Votes to Move Its Offices to LHS; Move to Save over $400k Annually

The Board of Education Thursday evening voted to move its offices out of the Madison Avenue location and into the Lakewood High School, as first reported on our News Alerts.

The move, which was voted on unanimously, will save the district about $40,000 per month – $480,000 annually.

The Board will occupy 7,000 sq ft of space for office purposes. Board meetings will be held at The High School cafeteria.

Construction to outfit the space for office purposes, will begin shortly, a Board official says. The Board expects the move to take place over the Summer break in hopes of having everything up and running for the beginning of the new school year.

The BOE moved its offices from the Princeton Avenue school to their current Madison Avenue location approximately 4 1/2 years ago.

“The Lakewood Board of Education looks forward to this move and is excited about what it means for the future of our students and the people of Lakewood,” a Board member said to TLS.

  1. The Board of Education “dropped the ball” two years ago when they disbanded our auto shop and sold our $50,000 car lift for pennies. They already closed the metal shop and wood shop. Now they are permanently taking the space from our kids.

The Board of Education plans to foreclose our future in July during their extended six months for which they were not elected. They each extended 6 months to their terms by moving elections from April to November. In the name of justice, wait until November before making this perpetual change.

When I joined the LHS faculty, we had shops that taught carpentry, welding and car mechanics. Board members rely on misinformation from people without vision, people who do not know Lakewood.

Does anyone care that we have over 30,000 children and young adults in Lakewood, many of whom can be served by our district with free English education and vocational courses?

By the way, BOE, have you done your environmental studies yet?

  2. Mr. lang, I wonder if you did your study on the extended term of board members. The taxpayer is saving $60K in money and more important majority of the districts in New Jersey moved the election last year. At that time you did not comment.
I have one question for you, when the district stopped carpentry, metal and other area’s you mentioned who was the president and who was on the board.

  3. I took some measurements this morning. Classrooms A-106, A-107, A-108 and A-109 were vacant last year. They form a whole wing on the south side of the auditorium and have a separate entrance on Somerset Avenue. If fact, the Board can use the left back quarter of the auditorium for meetings just as we used the right side for our faculty meetings for years. This wing is perfect for the offices. There is no need to take away our shops.

The district wants to use A-106 (a parallelogram with an area of 1,217 sq. ft.) for a parent resource center. This can be done anywhere. Recently, we started using A-107 (same rough diminsions), A-108 (1,116 square feet) and A-109 (992 sq. ft.) for special, occupational and physical therapy because they have certain utilities in the classrooms (reasons why they would be inexpensive to convert). Together with storage rooms, the south side of the A building is a total of 153 x 31. The hall is ten feet wide adding an extra 1,530 square feet bring the total to 6,273 square feet.

Last year we used D104 for OC and PT. If we leave A-106 for the use of special children and perhaps utilize the math lab in the B building , with its 1,200 sq. ft., or some other classroom, then A-107, A 108 and A-109 will be available for the central offices (5,281 square feet).

We have the equipment and facility to bring free separate gender vocational and professional courses to our young people during evening hours. LHS teachers are ready and willing to do this at a cost to taxpayer of $120 a week for a three-hour course.

LHS is an important asset. It is slowly being broken up and permanently removed from our use. I will use every legal resource at my disposal to prevent the decimation of our school. The public schools are for all the people, including us.

If we lose our district schools, we lose our opportunity to solve the tuition crisis, state funding conundrum and opportunity problem. Trenton is too far behind the rest of the country in adopting a charter model that can accommodate our people. On the other hand, our district has the discretion, if not the vision, to do bring free English to all our kids.

Too many people have too little vision.

  4. I think Mr. Lang should be the superintendent, and the only person on the school board. I would like to know if he ever ran for the township committee.
