LPD Takes Steps to Improve School Security Township-Wide

With recent nationwide events involving schools, the Lakewood Police Department is taking more steps to improve school security throughout the Township, Police Chief Rob Lawson tells TLS. Over the last month, Chief Lawson, Sgt. Robert DeSimone of the Special Operations Division and others have met with Mayor Albert Ackerman and Police Liaison Meir Lichtenstein to discuss the mission of bringing school security to a new level.

Chief Lawson has developed a plan based on educating the school staff and improved police patrols in and around schools. The Chief has instructed the department’s patrol officers to increase their police presence around all townships schools.

Also, on a voluntary basis, the department is setting up a program in which a uniform patrol officer will make random stops at schools to create a more visible police presence.

Additionally, the Lakewood Police Department is in the process of having two police officers trained in school security, Chief Lawson says. The officers are receiving training approved by the New Jersey Department of Education and the New Jersey Department of Homeland Security. Starting in early March these officers will be available to instruct Administrators, teachers and students in the schools on how to perform the four state mandated security drills: Lock down (active shooter), shelter in place, bomb threat and evacuation. 1. This is a good and worthwhile program.

However, all school administrators need to understand the safety and security measures that they need to take, when officers are not present.

Depend on no one but yourself for the first line of security.

  2. John Stillwell has brought school security to levels the district has not seen in over ten years. His professionalism and knowledge has improved all levels of security with in our schools. I know John is currently working on plans to introduce increasing security at all schools.

The district is lucky to have John Stillwell
