Township Vs Tent City: Hearing Set For Friday

Attorneys for both the Lakewood Township and the homeless of Tent City will appear before a Judge this Friday. It’s been about fourteen months since the plaintiff and defendants have been in court last, which left Lakewood with little power over the homeless encampment.

Since Judge Joseph Foster’s seemingly vague ruling in January, 2012, the encampment grew by many new residents and structures – though that was directly against a temporary settlement, officials said at numerous public meetings.

During the 2012 ruling, the Judge ruled that Lakewood and Ocean County have some sort of an obligation to care for the poor, but said he did not know if he could force Lakewood or the County to continue providing services for them. He expected both sides to come up with an agreement – something which never happened.

Since then, at least one more person died from apparent hypothermia, and several were injured from fires and violence.

In December last year, about one hundred residents who reside in the vicinity of Tent City, gathered at the Municipal building demanding action from the Township Committee.

Officials, and neighboring residents, this time round are hoping for a strong ruling in the Township’s favor to bring an end to the growing issue. TLS.

  1. Get rid of the them they are destroying the property and neighboring property’s are loosing value and residents because of them they are filthy and have lived for free long enough

  2. #2 i hope that they force you to live near tent city. once you’ll enjoy the smelly & dangerous situation i’m sure that YOU’LL CHANGE YOUR OPPINION

  3. Has anyone gone to the library lately? There is a putrid smell when you walk in from the tent residents that hang out there the whole day. No one know what disease they might have and are sitting on the couches there sleeping, really unpleasant. They are bring down the quality of life for the whole town. They need to go and get the help they need from a shelter and drug rehab.

  4. Maybe if the Minster had stocked Tent City with nice people who were down on their lucjk – he would have had a case. Instead he allowed drug addicts, thieves and alcohloics in -no wonder why the town is against him….ge sgould have chosen the residents better ter- Tent City i s a failure thanks to him

  5. Lakewood is too small to properly care for the homeless. In New York City the homeless are considered to have a right to shelter. Not only are there shelters for people to sleep in, there are also drop-in centers for people to spend the day in. Tent City is a makeshift shelter and the library is a makeshift drop-in center. The homeless should be made aware that they would be better off in New York City than in Lakewood.
