Today, the Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations of America – the nation’s largest Orthodox Jewish umbrella organization– expressed its support for federal legislation to prevent gun violence.
Nathan Diament, UOJCA executive director for public policy, issued the following statement ahead of this week’s anticipated United States Senate consideration of gun safety legislation:
“The Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations of America has long supported common sense gun safety legislation – including banning assault weapons – and other meaningful efforts to reduce gun violence.
In the wake of the tragic deaths of children and teachers in Newtown, Connecticut, the Orthodox Union pledged to ‘join with all Americans of good will to assure the security of our children and our places of learning.’
Of course, all Americans – whether adults or children, in all places, whether in a school, synagogue, shopping mall or movie theatre – should be as free of the fear and threat of gun violence as we can reasonably assure.
We urge Senators to pass legislation this week that contains constructive and practical measures that will help assure a safer and more secure American society.” TLS.
I am very sad to hear that the OU would support this legislation. Jews need to arm themselves not disarm.
They should keep quiet regarding controversial hot button issues that don’t directly and specifically affect them.

since when do so called ‘assault’ weapons equal gun violence? ar15 rifles dont shoot bullets any faster than a regular pistol can.
assault means to attack an innocent person. that’s not what guns, or ar15’s are made for. they are made for personal self defense which isn’t “assaulting”, but rather JUSTIFIABLE HOMICIDE. (and hunting) there IS a difference between assault/murder/ and JUSTIFIABLE HOMICIDE.
if a knife, baseball bat, or alcohol is misused; does it now become an assault knife? assault bat? assault alcohol?
Didn’t learn the first time? A little guy in Germany disarmed the populace and what happened? If there was no disarming back then perhaps 6 million lives would have been saved.
I still don’t get why everyone is so anti the anti gun legislations. Facts are Newtown would have been avoided had guns been outlawed. Lanza was mechunich in gun violence. His mother bought those guns legally.Many have a shita not to allow their children to play with water guns so as not to teach them violence. Why is that not true for the greater society as a whole. If we outlaw as many guns as possible kids will be raised with less violent intent. Yes violent videos and how they affect children have to be scruutinized. But kids playing with guns are even worse.

No mention of the tragedys that occur so frequently because of household legally obtained guns… Just look at what happened in toms river… Nebuch! Why frum Yidden are so anti gun control is beyond me! Hey mr conservative Adam Lanza did. Those guns were legally obtained. So was all the ammunition. People aren’t born criminals, we therefor need to make sure we are careful about who’s hands these powerful weapons fall into. Easy enough to understand?

Mr. Gesh- you do realize that there are over 300,000,000 guns in America with over 90,000,000 legal gun owners. The vast majority of all gun violence comes from inner city thugs killing each other. Do not make it more difficult for legal gun owners to protect themselves and possibly you from these criminals.

semantics? there is a HUGE difference between someone taking his or her gun and committing a crime – or someone stealing a gun that doesn’t belong to him or her, and shooting the guns’ owner to then go out and commit further crimes.
its not semantics. ask any judge, and they will tell you that there is a HUGE legal difference. its YOU who is smearing one topic with another and claiming its the same thing. learn the law.

TO: Mr. Conservative & geshmakalypse Not to worry the new proposed gun control laws the the Democrats are proposing will solve this problem. Adam Lanza would have to get a background check before he can use the guns he took from his mother.
