Police Conduct Pedestrian Safety Initiative on Monmouth Avenue

Following last month’s successful Pedestrian Safety Initiative on Clifton Avenue, Police this morning conducted another similar initiative on Monmouth Avenuewith decoys and all.

The violation for not stopping in for a pedestrian in a NJ Crosswalk, could be 2 Points and a fine of $200, among other penalties. [SEE FULL CARD HERE].

“Pedestrian safety is an issue that affects our entire community; young and old, drivers and walkers, in the day and at night,” Police Chief Rob Lawson told TLS during last month’s initiative. ”Many avoidable injuries and fatalities occur as a result of inattentiveness of either the driver or the pedestrian. The roadways should be safe places for everyone regardless of their transportation mode.”

During last month’s initiative, over 230 vehicles were stopped and given warnings for their violations.

In the last year, over 100 pedestrians were struck by vehicles in Lakewood, an officer said during that detail.

Over the next few weeks, the Police Department will be conducting several more of these ‘warning’ details, before actual summonses are issued, police said. TLS-62/TLS-28/46.

  1. I am sorry. This business of pedestrians stepping out into the street and vehicles having to make a shortstop is ridiculous. There has to be a middle ground.

  2. is this applicable only when there is a crosswalk with white lines? not all streets on monmouth or even clifton have a crosswalk can someone please clarify

  3. why should this have been done on passover ? what difference would it have made

    they should make sure to do one on Pine street by MLK or Warren you could wait there for a while to cross when the crossing guards aren’t there (which is why we need a light by MLK and Pine)

  4. I wouldn’t step into a crosswalk unless I didn’t see any cars near enough to hit me if they didn’t stop on time. I am not taking any chances.

  5. #4 this law only applies if the pedestrian is off the curb ,not if they are standing on the sidewalk or the curb. The question of why not on passover is very relevant because alot of people were trying to cross and the people driving in the streets were not stopping including police cars , I personally witnessed this.

  6. I was driving down County Line today when on 2 different blocks (one possibly Monmouth Ave, I don’t remember) there were pedestrians crossing however 1 was crossing at a crosswalk while the other one was crossing in middle of the street (not by a corner or a crosswalk)

  7. It does not matter if there are crossing guards present or not. People do what they want anyway. Jay walk, hitch hike, speed and many other hazardous issues. I think we need to stop the warnings! We all know the law and obviously people just do not care because nothing ever comes of it. Maybe we should actually follow the law and issue the violations!!!!!!

  8. By the way, the law is for PEDESTRIANS who are in the crosswalk.

    The way some people drive, they seem to think that if they inch their cars into the intersection, then traffic on the main road has to stop for them as well.

  9. as per #6 does this law make sense??? should it be limited to stop signs??? this needs a real study. or analyse existing studies with equal population density.
