VIDEO: Over one hundred TorahMates volunteers gathered last night for an evening of chizuk and discussion at Oorah. The volunteers were inspired by an address by Rabbi Avi Schnall, National Director of Oorah’s ChillZone program, who emphasized how much can be accomplished in the half hour a week that is dedicated to learning with a TorahMate.
Another highlight of the evening was a question and answer session with Rabbi Chaim Mintz, shlita, founder and spiritual leader of Oorah. The questions reflected the varied experiences that TorahMates face. One volunteer asked about how to explain the concept of karbanos to his vegetarian TorahMate while another asked R’ Chaim what to tell a TorahMate who is upset that her husband feeds their children non-kosher food.
Most importantly, the volunteers had a chance to meet their TorahMates coordinators, the men and women who orchestrate the thousands of TorahMates partnerships around the world.
“Oorah’s TorahMates are “ordinary” men and women who devote some of their time each week sharing their Torah knowledge and love of Yiddishkeit with a partner less knowledgeable than them,” says a TorahMates volunteer. “It doesn’t take any special knowledge or skill to be a TorahMate; all it takes is a desire to share one’s love of Yiddishkeit with our fellow Jews.” To sign up, you can call (877) TORAH-123.
