Census Taken at Tent City As Encampment Prepares to Wind Down

In compliance with the terms agreed upon by the Township and County officials in the Consent Agreement, officials today began taking a census of the homeless in an effort to move ahead with the placement process.

According to the terms signed by the Judge last month, the agreement would only provide placement for those who resided in the encampment at the time of the settlement, and exclude any newcomers, according to officials.

The consent agreement, as earlier reported, will allow for the Tent City residents to remain in the encampment until proper placement could be found for them by working with County and other officials. Once placement is found for the homeless, the camp would be closed.

Mayor Akerman last month said the placement process could take a few months, but hopefully no longer than a year. [TLS]

  1. Thank you all who worked so hard to approach this in’tent’se problem with compassion. It is not so easy to fix these complicated challenges and one has to deal with many frustrations. I know Mayor Akerman and Attorney Wouters worked hard – not to take away from the others that I am not mentioning. May you all be blessed for your efforts and successful in relocating people who should not have to be at the mercy of the elements.

  2. “the agreement would only provide placement for those who resided in the encampment at the time of the settlement, and exclude any newcomers, according to officials.” So you are going to throw out any new comers to tent city, what makes you think you can throw them out and not be able to throw out the current residents? What is going to happen is the new comers will get a Lawyer and a Liberal Democrat to say it is not fair to throw them out and a Judge will let them stay.

  3. This is so sad. Its not gonna work. Rule # 1 shouldve been: No. New. Residents. Period. If they let new ppl in, Tent City will never go away. Ever. And you know it. I feel terrible for the Arlington-area residents who are suffering @ the hand of these miscreants living for free on our property, while ignoring our laws. Come to think of it, I shoulda made my Lag B’omer fire in Tent City. No permit ? No problem.

  4. I live near tent city. There has been an major influx of new residents racing to get there before the census. I have seen at least 10-15 new people who I have never seen before walking out of tent city. Each one more scarier than the next. My kids are terrified. Lets get the census over with and close it down as soon as possible

  5. What happened to the first part of my comment? I ask what was going to happen to the land once they get the homeless out? As I said before hope the people pushing the homeless out never are homeless. Used to be a nice quiet town,no more, toomuch traffic.

  6. Residents will be tested for illegal substance abuse . Those not complying with work, school or staying clean will not get any housing, or limited housing . This should be interesting . Over 80 residents currently live there .
