UPDATED: Boy Hospitalized after Near-Drowning

A child was hospitalized after a near-drowning incident this evening. At about 6 PM, Police, EMS and Hatzolah were summoned after the 8 year-old boy was pulled unconscious from the bottom of a neighborhood pool by two on-duty lifeguards.

The lifeguards reportedly performed CPR on the child, who regained consciousness by the time the first medical personnel arrived on scene, an official said.

Detective Sergeant Greg Staffordsmith says there were approximately 17 people at the pool at the time.

The boy was transported by Hatzolah Paramedics to Jersey Shore Medical Center in stable condition.

The incident was investigated by Lakewood’s Detectives Bureau and by the Prosecutors Office.

Unrelated to this particular incident, a Hatzolah asked that TLS remind pool-owners of the importance of posting clear signs around the pool containing the pool’s exact address. [TLS]

  1. B’H, the lifeguard at this pool was extremely qualified and worked speedily to save this boy. My sons were there when it happened and they were pretty traumatized but iy’h this boy will be OK. But B’H we had a great lifeguard on duty over there! Refuah sheleima!

  2. children need to be taught the danger of the deep water… little kids dont always understand that the deep water is quite dangerous. when a child drowns — it is quiet and could go undetected in a pool with many children.

  3. I recently retired from being a lifeguard for about 13 years (in which i have saved countless people) the only time a person is found on the bottom of the pool is if chas vishalom there is spinal injury or after the active drowning phase this article is most likely written incorrectly as I don’t think 2 guards can miss an active drowning scene for so long.
I have and continue to daven every year by nisana tokef that we not have to experience a true drowning.

May we not hear of any more such stories.

#4 i disagree there is NO reason a drowning should go undetected at all unless the proper steps were not taken ie: to many kids per guard pool to cloudy (I have personally a few times shut down the deep waters for this reason)
