Nutritionist Ezi Levi: How to Eat Following Fasting

I hope you are having an easy fast. The weather is supposed to be hot and humid so please take it easy and stay indoors as much as possible. I am asked by many about what to eat after the fast. So allow me to share my thoughts on this with you.

The main suggestion that I can give you is to plan ahead. Decide beforehand what you will be eating for the meal and GO SLOW.

It would be better to eat a small amount and then take a break (even for 30 minutes) and then eat some more.

Most post fast headaches come from an influx of sugar into the body – after the blood sugar had gone down significantly due to the fast – so by doing what I just suggested, will help.

Of course you will need to hydrate yourself and being that it was so hot today, it becomes even more important.
Sports drinks can be effective to replenish missing electrolytes after a fast – but the jury is still out as to how effective they are. So if you do, please limit how much you drink as they are full of sugar and/or artificial sweeteners.

Hatzlocha Rabbah and may we be Zocheh to the Geula Shelaima B’mheira B’yamainu.

  1. Try taking a break for 5-10 minutes at first. 30 minutes is a stretch if your not accustomed to slowing your meals down. It’s a huge family effort that comes easily to us after a year of practice.
