POLL: Should NJ Temporarily Suspend Licenses of Those Caught Texting While Driving?

Young New York drivers could soon have their licenses suspended temporarily if caught while driving, under new legislation voted on by the Senate and Assembly.

Under the new law, they would face a 60 day suspension for a first offense and for up to six months for a second offense, according to reports.

Should New Jersey pass similar legislation, perhaps, for all drivers?

  1. While I think if it was enforceable, it could be a good deterrent against texting while driving, I don’t know how enforceable it will be. It is not as cut and dry as say a DUI case. There is breathalyzer evidence for the most part in those cases.
I would imagine if you get pulled over for texting while driving, unless they officer has photographic evidence, it would be hard to prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that they were in fact texting while driving.
My guess is that it would almost always get plead down in court to a lesser offense with a bigger fine.
A fine is not a big enough deterrent to stop drivers from this action. I think the chance of losing a liscence for an extended period would be.

  2. I think there should be a warning period, and then this law should be enforced. To text while driving is dangerous, selfish, and plainly stupid!

  3. as dangerous as it is its not big enough to suspend a lisence. you can not compare this at all to dui. dui your a murderer while texting your just very inresponsibile which can lead to death.
as well as there are many things that distract drivers besides texting (loud music, eating, putting on make up etc…..) so if you ready to make such a big move lets through all distractions in the law not just texting.

Also you got to understand that if this law gets in affect you will have many suspentions daily and that will cause more harm. having so many ppl not being able to drive and get around or to work or school and you will build up crime.and cause good ppl harm and cause good ppl to have no choice but to be bad.

  4. ditto to #6; nevertheless, that doesn’t make it any less important to stop texting. It is potentially just as dangerous as dui

  5. ALL motor vehicle laws should be enforced period…………
way to many people texting while driving, there have been countless accidents and deaths related to drivers texting
