Outerbridge Crossing to Close Nightly for Paving Until October

Starting tonight, July 9, 2013, through October 2013, The Port Authority of NY & NJ will perform a pavement improvement project on the Outerbridge Crossing to improve traffic safety and driving conditions.

The Outerbridge Crossing will be closed overnight in both directions, Monday to Thursday from 10 p.m. until 5 a.m. the following morning, and Friday from 11:59 p.m. to 7 a.m. Saturday. The bridge will be open in both directions on Saturday and Sunday nights and holiday weekends.

After Labor Day, the bridge will close at 9 p.m. on weeknights and open at 8 a.m. on Saturday mornings.

This is the first of three innovative projects for the bridges connecting Staten Island and New Jersey. Future projects include replacing the Goethals Bridge and the raising of the Bayonne Bridge roadway to allow for larger ships to pass through to our ports.

During the scheduled work, traffic will be diverted to the Goethals Bridge. Call 511 or check  www.511NY.org or www.511NJ.org for current traffic information. Visit www.panynj.gov/outerbridgepaving for project details. [TLS]

  1. They should replace the outerbridge aswell as its very narrow and trucks can’t pass without taking up both lanes which slows donw the traffic flow

  2. Just wondering how does repaving improve traffic flow? Also I drive the outer bridge very very often and I can think of a lot of projects that are more important. Just another example of NYC dot being the dumbest government agency out there as evidenced by what is and has been going on on the staten island expressway for the past 30 years
