Lakewood Vaad Endorses Cory Booker to Fill Lautenberg’s Seat

[LETTER] Ahead of tomorrow’s Special Primary Elections to fill late U.S. Senator Lautenberg’s seat, signs are being hung around town tonight with the Lakewood Vaad’s endorsment of Newark Mayor Cory Booker as the replacement.

The following is the contents of the letter:

“Today, Tuesday August 13, there is an important democratic primary election for US Senate, in order to fill the seat long held by Frank Lautenberg who died this year.

Two of the candidates, Frank Pallone and Cory Booker are well known to us and long time friends. Pallone has loyally worked on our behalf in Congress for many years, helping yechidim and the klal with energy and dedication. Booker has been active in statewide politics for many years, and has been a great advocate for our community and matters of great importance to us.

This presents a difficult choice for us as to who deserves our backing.

While they both are deserving, we heartily endorse Cory Booker for one reason – his positions on vouchers. There is no stronger advocate in NJ for private school vouchers (including our Mosdos) than Cory Booker.

Our Mosdos and families are in desperate need of relief – and Cory Booker – as Mayor of the City of Newark, has bucked the Democratic party and has been a tireless advocate for vouchers. His election to the US Senate would be the first time there is a powerful Democrat pushing hard for vouchers.

It is for this reason, along with his friendship and sensitivity to the needs of our community and the needs of our families that we endorse Cory Booker in the Democratic Primary.

If you are a registered Democrat, please take a few minutes to help our entire Kehilla by casting your vote for Cory Booker today. Undeclared voters can simply declare as a democrat at your polling station at the time of voting.”

  1. Martin Luther King said in famous “I Have A Dream” address, “…I have a dream that one day, man will be judged not by the color of his skin but by the content of his character…”

Mayor Booker exemplifies that very point. While many DO vote based upon their physical similarities, I vote upon whom I think would best serve the country.

Booker has shown himself to be a uniter, not a divider.

G-D bless him and this great U.S. Of A.!

  2. while i think cory is a cool guy, mentch and also a very eloquent speaker and decent individual, I have to say his politics are very liberal and he is solidly in Obama’s camp vis a vis Obama care. I believe it is vitally important to try any way we can to increase the amount of Republicans in the Senate since there is such an overwhelming majority of Democrats running the govt these days. Those of us with conservative values need to have a voice. The overall economic situation right now is awful and is not being helped under the current administration. Also foreign policy is, frankly, scary.

Agree that vouchers would be wonderful, after all I have a bunch of kids in school and it is a huge strain, but between me and all of you, the chances of it getting passed are slim to none. And the funds will not exactly sititng there waiting to be dispensed to us private school parents. We will definitely pay for it somehow – in increased real estate taxes, no doubt.
