EXCLUSIVE: VIDEO: MUA’s Executive Director Discusses Halachic Issues Which Arose With New Water Meter System & His Task in Finding a Solution
[EXCLUSIVE VIDEO INTERVIEW] After receiving a phone call from a resident that the new water meter installed at his home could pose a Hilchos Shabbos issue, Lakewood MUA’s Executive Director Justin Flancbaum was tasked with getting to the bottom of it.
The water meter in question is a digital meter which the Township began testing about two years ago. But after the MUA installed it into one particular home, the resident found what he believed to be a breach in Hilchos Shabbos due to its digital display, and requested the MUA install an older version in its place. And so, committed to top-notch customer service, Justin had the meter immediately replaced.
But that didn’t solve the possible issue.
In an effort to ensure the water meters adhered fully to Halacha, Justin contacted Rabbi Gissinger, as well as with the Bais Horaah’s Av Bais Din, Harav Shlomo Miller, to thoroughly analyze the meter and its issues and clarify any mishaps they may encounter in regards to Hilchos Shabbos.
Equipped with the Halachic guidance of the Rabbonim, Justin explained the issue to the water meter company, and the issues which it could face in every major Jewish community it services – including Baltimore which was looking to install these meters throughout the City. In response, the company agreed to create a new prototype – at no extra charge.
Though Justin is credited with the tireless efforts he put into finding the proper solution, he shrugs it off.
“It’s what we do here,” says Justin. “One of the benefits of having a local utilities authority as your water and sewer provider is that we’re local, we’re here -we’re proud that we’re able to solve a problem for our customers.”
