Volunteers Wanted to Help Clean Woodlawn Cemetery

cemetery kennedyVolunteers are being sought to assist with leaf and debris removal at the Woodlawn Cemetery as a result of Hurricane Sandy, Dawn Matthews, the organizer of the cleanup tells TLS.

“Because of the destruction caused by Hurricane Sandy, the Woodlawn Cemetery in Lakewood needs community assistance to provide leaf and debris removal,” Matthews wrote to TLS. “We are asking for volunteers to come join us Sunday, Dec. 8th, from 9AM until 1PM. ”

The cemetery is located at the corner of County Line Road and Route 9.

The volunteers will meet at the on-site office located at the Courtney Street entrance at 9AM. Volunteers are asked to bring a rake and gloves. If you have access to a gas-powered leaf blower or tarps, they would also be appreciated, Matthews says.

For questions or to volunteer, please call Dawn Matthews 732-458-9436. [TLS]

  1. they have no money because of the lack of people being burried there, thus the need for the volunteers. upkeep to mow grass, remove trees and to remove leaves is costly.

  2. The cemetery does not have funds for the cleanup. There arent many people being buried there which means no funds coming in to provide maintenance . The cemetery has been around for quite some and I am sure alot of the people that are buried there do not have family around to upkeep the plot. There is no upkeep plan for eternity. If a cemetery has money coming in, they maintain all of the cemetery. If not, it goes to shambles. It is a great deed to maintain the cemetery and provide respect for the deceased . Do not ask why or how the cemetery does not have money. Just go and help. It would be a great gesture if people in the Lakewood community helped. There are many many jewish people buried in the cemetery if you need an extra reason.

  3. Amazing. A chance to help our neighbors with no modesty issues, no religious issues, no political overtones… Just a request to lend a neighborly hand. If you don’t want to go, don’t go, but keep your mean-spirited comments to yourself. It would be awesome if 40 black hats showed up. I’ll be there.
