PHOTOS: Gas for $2.50 Per Gallon?

shell discountPHOTOS: “Gas for $2.50 at Shell tonight until midnight.” Did you get that text message last night and thought it must be a scam? It turns out apparently, that it wasn’t.

What reportedly occurred is as follows. A local Lakewood resident figured out how to generate a lot of points on his Shell account, and in the process help others save money on gas.

gas 2Stop & Shop has a program where if you join their Stop & Shop program – similar to Shoprite’s Price Plus – you get points for each purchase. In return for each point ,you are eligible to receive discounted gas at participating Shell gas stations. However, the points do expire after 30 days.

So the resident last night sent out text messages to friends to come and join at the Shell gas station for a fill-up at $2.50 per gallon, and the text went ‘viral’.

Dozens of residents showed up at the gas station and in fact many managed to get the discounted gas – discounted about 80 cents per gallon. [TLS-85]

  1. Haha
The guy made about $1.40 per gallon. Nice job.
I earn my own points, and pay about $1.10 per gallon.

I can offer the $2.50 to anyone, any day of the week. 30 Gallon minimum. (bring 2 cars)

  2. You should make sure doing this is legal according to the rewards program rules. On another note, this guy spent $2,200 in less than two months at Stop n Shop?

  3. Arone,
He did it to make money. He had enough points to get the gas for $1.12 a gallon. He was charging people $2.50 a gallon which means he made around $1.40 a gallon. It does not sound like this would be allowed according to the rewards program but i dont know. You would have to check with Stop N Shop

  4. Fuel savings are limited to 35 gallons of fuel per vehicle per purchase, or limits placed on your payment card by your financial institution, which may be lower. Total discount cannot exceed price per gallon. In New Jersey, savings apply after fueling at the posted price and will appear on the receipt. Limit of 2,200 Stop & Shop Gas Rewards points may be redeemed with any fill up. Earned Gas Rewards points are available for redemption within 24 hours. Gas Rewards points can be earned at Stop & Shop store locations and on Peapod orders, and redeemed at participating Shell and Stop & Shop station locations. Gas Rewards points cannot be earned from fuel purchases. Must present your Stop & Shop card when making purchases to be eligible. Gas Rewards points are not transferable. Gas Rewards points are based on net purchase and are calculated after all excluded items, store discounts and store coupons have been subtracted from the purchase. Net purchase excludes alcoholic beverages, tobacco products, pharmacy items (NY & NJ only), gift cards, milk, Metro passes and any other purchase prohibited by law. Gas Rewards points expire 30 days from date of issuance. Your date of purchase is day 1. All Gas Rewards points, available at the time of a gasoline transaction, will be redeemed. Visit your participating Stop & Shop store for program details. Program may be modified or discontinued at any time without notice. Not valid where prohibited by law. 5. if you spend $100 at stop and shop, you get 10 cents off per gallon at Shell station. The maximum discount you can get is $2.20 discount per gallon. The discount can only be used once, in a single transaction. And the points expire after 30 days.
Some wise guy, spent 2,200 in Stop and Shop in a 30 day period (probably on Gift Cards or by having multiple people use his card for their shopping) and was entitled to $2.20 discount on a single gas purchase transaction at a Shell Station.
So if gas was at $3.30 per gallon, he paid only $1.10 per gallon, and sold them for $2.50 per gallon, for a profit of $1.40 per gallon.
With an average fillup of 12-15 gallons, that’s $18-25 per vehicle.
You can expect that this will repeat itself in no more than a month’s time.
Keep your tank on empty til then
