Should Lakewood get any more snow storms, the town could run out of salt, TLS has learned. Committeeman and liaison to Department of Public Works Ray Coles tells TLS that as of Tuesday, the Township’s salt supply is nearly depleted, and that the current supply could run out should the Township get hit with another storm.
The DPW is currently waiting for another delivery of salt, says, Coles, though it’s being delayed because if the nationwide shortage. The next shipment is expected to be approximately 20 tons, which is stored in a massive shed at the John Franklin site.
Townships and cities nationwide are scrambling to get their hands on salt shipments. New Jersey is currently waiting on a 40,000 ton shipment which was reportedly held up in Maine because a foreign-flagged vessel was carrying the salt. According to the Merchant Marine Act of 1920, ships carrying cargo between U.S. ports must be U.S.- flagged.
Some Lakewood stores have also run out of salt. [TLS]
Why should it affect the township when they very rarely use salt?
Don’t make a comment if you don’t know what your talking about #1. You are closed minded and have no clue ! Now bring on more stupid comments.
Towns should look at the worst winter for snow ever and budget enough salt for a winter like that. If you have extra salt, it will be leftover for the next winter and you can budget less the following winter.
Do not plow is the motto lately and than the snow will give the residents traction and no need to salt. It will save product and overtime, than plow only when the sun comes out.
they don’t salt anyway so why is this newsworthy….
Could’ve fool me. I thought the shortage affected Lakewood since 2013.
Quick, it’s raining and I need DPW to come and get rid of the puddles in front of my house. I know stupid comment, but it is just as bad as the other ones saying DPW doesn’t do their job. Do you folks complaining follow the trucks around town seeing what they do? That’s what a lot of complaints sound like.
Number #7
They didn’t salt my street. Did they salt your?
Wondering where do u live?
Hoping the next shipment will be more than 20 tons because 20 tons isn’t even a tri-axle dump truck load …. a tri-axle dump truck load is 25 tons so I don’t personally think 20 tons will really help much.
I heard that there is much better news about public works.
to #11. what can it be. please tell us.
So try pepper. It’s more granular anyway.
