NJ Newborns Would be Covered Under Parents Insurance During First Few Critical Months of Life Under New Bill

infant hospital Legislation to ensure newborns are covered under their parents insurance during the first few critical months of life was approved by an Assembly panel on Monday.

The bill, sponsored by Assemblywoman Pamela Lampitt, would extend the time period in which newborn children are covered under their parent’s health benefits coverage from the current 30 days to 90 days.

“With all that’s going on when a child is first born, the 30-day deadline can be problematic for some parents to meet and may cause unnecessary stress,” said Lampitt (D-Camden/Burlington). “This bill will provide a longer period of time for children to be covered under their parents’ health coverage in order to ensure that children have access to adequate health care during the critical first few months of life.”

Current law limits the coverage of newly born children to 30 days from their birth. At the conclusion of 30 days, the child would be without coverage, unless parents enroll the child in a private health benefits coverage policy or in a state or federal program, such as FamilyCare.

Lampitt’s bill was approved by the Assembly Women and Children Committee, which she chairs. [TLS]

  1. Why 90 days..why not 180…ten times chay..they need xtra time
Does this apply aswell for child from dependent age 26? Does anyone know..right now baby is excluded..why put these young mothers to stree??

  2. If u r confused, I will explain. Within 3 days fr getting home from hospital a parent must start mailing in document in order to get birth certificate, social security card, health insurance and perhaps more which I don’t recall at the moment. What I do recall is not sleeping and being 24/7 busy with a baby and my husband and I have this extra stress of getting all paperwork out correctly (!). If anything is not sent in correctly or to the correct place, I’ll never see or hear from the documents you r requesting. So thank you so much for passing this bill and helping mom and dads reover!

  3. whats with all the comments?! all this means, is that instead of newborns being kicked off their mother’s plan at the age of 1 month, the busy, stressed out, new parents can have 3 months to take care of new insurance plans…which is great! I’m talking from experience, the first 30 days after a baby is born, there isn’t much time to take care of these technical details, yet it is extremely crucial that they be on proper insurance plans…
