[VIDEO OF BEAR IN LAKEWOOD THIS EVENING] The black bear spotted in Lakewood yesterday evening was again spotted in Lakewood tonight – this time by children riding their bikes, TLS has learned.
The children were reportedly riding their bikes in the area of Iris Road, when they spotted the bear. The frightened boys reportedly jumped off their bikes and ran.
The video, submitted by a reader, shows the bear near a tree on North Lake Drive this evening.
Officials say the bears are usually wary of humans and will not attack unless teased or provoked.

What are the police gonna do, the bears have been passing through since time and memorial. Just leave them alone and soon they will migrate right out of town like they do every year. One day there is going to be a group of people crowding a bear and it will be a mother with cubs and the mother is going to attack someone. Then you will leave them alone!

I called the police and they said they are aware that the bear is on the loose in Lakewood however until it acts aggressive they can’t do anything!!!
The bear was spotted on Adams St and Van Buren right off Miller rd near Rabbi Herzka’s shul.
Were going on a bear hunt were gunu catch a big one, what a beautiful day..were not scared!

WHAT? The police have to wait till something dangerous happens? But a person can be arrested if he’s known to be dangerous. Crazy world we live in.

It is crazy do we have to wait till it becomes aggressive? Dies that mean someone has to get hurt? Who is calling the shots in this town ?

I can’t believe what I am reading. What is wrong with you people? You are talking about an innocent animal posing no threat to anyone! Aren’t we all taught to love and respect all creatures? Most drivers in this town are more dangerous than that bear! As long as you leave them alone, they will leave you alone. Educate your children to not bother them and you won’t have a problem. There have always been bears in New Jersey, it is us that are moving into their natural habitat. Scared of the remote possibility of encountering a bear? Move out of New Jersey.

In recent history bears have not been very prevalent in NJ. there were estimated to be less then 100 bears in the entire state in the 1950’s. They have been hunted as long as there have been people existong in the country.
What changed was that in the 1950’s they became a protected species, and as a result the Bear population is booming. As a result the state realized that there needs to be some control on the population and began allowing a controlled hunt over the past several years. That being said, outside of the specific hunt, they are still considered protected and the police can not shoot it unless it is acting defensively.
As far as the Bear just “passing through”, there is no reason to biggest that the bear is passing through. Bears are not a migratory animal, and usual stay within a 2 mile radius of their den, only leaving when their source of food runs out.
While generally afraid of human interaction, there are exceptions, and people should do a little research into what to do when confronted by a bear (perhaps TLS will post it, information available on NJ state website).
It should be tranquilized and taken back to the wild where it belongs.
That bear has more rights to be Lakewood than the residents at tent city…
Wow! Bad enough Lakewood is over crowded already with people, now we have to contend with bears? Hopefully this bear will tell his friends not to bother going into Lakewood. With all the traffic & people, it’s too dangerous for them. Oh, and by the way, people please do not leave any food out & be sure to throw some ammonia into your trash receptacles in order to deter animals of any kind from foraging through it looking for food.
i feel an awesome sense of security knowing a bear is roaming freely around the town i live in, maybe ill even invite it for dinner

Taught to love and respect all animals?? No! Not sure who taught you that were taught not to needlessly hurt animals but if it poses a threat to humans then humans come first. Now whether this bear is a threat to humans is the question under discussion. Maybe now you understand these comments.

First the bear is in his natural habitat..unfortunately there are so many people moving into the town and taking up more woods that we are running out of space. That is why you are seeing more foxes, deer & now bears..they need space to live too..Its a shame that all people want to do it get rid of them
If you give them their space and let them do their own thing eventually they will move on. And we can relax again, or until they roam through town again going north
