Man Found Dead in Tent City

lpd tls chargerA man has been found dead at the Tent City homeless camp, officials tell TLS. Police and EMS responded to the encampment around 8 PM, and upon arrival discovered an unresponsive man in a wheelbarrow, sources tell TLS.

First responders from Lakewood First Aid and MONOC removed the man from the wheelbarrow and began performing CPR on him, but resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The man was approximately 61 years old, officials say.

“Although there isn’t any evidence to suggest foul play, an autopsy will be performed to determine the cause of death,” Dsgt. Greg Staffordsmith said.

Lakewood’s Detective Bureau, CIU and Medical Examiners Office are responding to the scene.

  1. Drug and alcohol overdose I saw him walking around today totally unable to keep himself upright. If only the rest of the people here would cooperate we will all be placed.

  2. To by huh ? The proper spelling is what is stated in the story … wheelbarrow , you can insure that by reseraching it in the Websters dictionary if you so desire.

  3. To chris-what does that mean ‘cooperate with what? All be placed where ?’
I thought the tent city residents had no place to go… noone ro turn to …. but it sounds like someone wants them to do something and give them better dwelling?

  4. I am simply puzzled at the lack of humanity portrayed by the men and/or women for the loss of life. The decedent is a son, perhaps a father. Whether or not the decedent had drug and/or alcohol dependencies, who are you all to judge. May God have mercy on your souls. My condolences to this gentleman’s family and friends for his loss. May he rest in peace! To those that made the heartless and thoughtless and very shameful comments, may you never be homeless or acquire substance dependencies. I suggest you pray some more.

  5. Why would a person be concerned about how to spell wheelbarrow when a life was just lost? Last thought that would come to my mind. No matter how this guy died, he obviously had struggles that most of us will never know. Just sayin’… (& yes, I’m aware I spelled saying incorrectly).

  6. Drug and alcohol abuse take thousands of lives every year. It is a disease that requires treatment. Most of the tent city residents could use a proper rehab…not a “follow the rules” policy that is impossible for them to keep because they are not receiving proper treatment.

  7. RIP Dad you were an amazing father
    From
Teaching me how to Weld when I was 6
Staying up till the AM soldering with me on countless science projects
Letting me work for your buisness because i would learn more than pushing carts at shoprite
and most importantly how to treat other people

I really hope i will grow up to be as good of a person as you

  8. People don’t belong living in tents in the 21st century in America. It is cruel and inhumane to people. A man is dead , a father’s life extinguished, a brother is gone. We need a real shelter in Ocean County, one that can help people survive , revive and thrive , by assisting with any problems they may have . Mr Hardman did not have a mean bone in his body . He had problems , yes, because of his wife’s death . G-d takes all this into account , a person like him will receive more forgiveness than cold hearted people who turned their backs on the poor . May we all wish we had the heart and spirit of Mr Hardman . No one can understand the perfect mercy , compassion and wisdom of G-d . May we remember the good , and forget the shortcomings as we would like done to ourselves .

  9. Rest in peace. Doug . He had a hard life the last few years . Mr. Hardman was not a drug addict, and I have never seen him take street drugs in my presence. What Ocean County needs is a shelter, not Tent City where the residents seem to not care about those in need . The shelter could be run by a volunteer staff, so that all money collected benefits them- shelter, food, education, etc. There has been more than enough money thrown at TC, with no results .G-d forgives in big way and can make our sins as white as snow . Isaiah 1: 18 .
