Your NJ Inspection Sticker Could Soon Say “U Text, U-Drive, U-Pay”

inspection sticker tlsTo remind motorists of the consequences of texting while driving, Assemblyman Wayne P. DeAngelo (D-Hamilton) recently introduced legislation that would place a clear message – “U Text, U-Drive, U-Pay” – on the inspection sticker located on a vehicle’s windshield.

“Texting and driving is clearly a dangerous distraction for motorists. This simple message on the windshield inspection sticker would serve as a reminder for those who may be tempted to send a quick message that no text is worth the consequences,” said DeAngelo.

Assembly Bill 3359 (A-3359) would require motor vehicle sticker to notify drivers of penalty for texting while driving. Under current law, texting and driving carries a penalty of $200 to $400 for a first offense; a penalty of $401 up to $600 for a second offense; and a penalty between $610 and $800 for any subsequent offense. Those committing a texting and driving offense for a third or subsequent offense also may be subject to a loss of license up to 90 days and three motor vehicle penalty points.

DeAngelo said he wrote the legislation after being contacted by the Robbinsville High School group of Students Against Drunk Driving (SADD) who likened the need for the anti- texting and driving message to the “Click it or Ticket” slogan that is displayed on some motor vehicles stickers.

“The younger generation of motorists also is the generation that tends to be more active users of texting and smartphones, which is why it is admirable that these students recognize the dangers of texting and driving and have spoken out to educate other drivers,” DeAngelo said. “The interest demonstrated by these students to advocate for their idea is commendable and a true example of the way the democratic process can truly be used to pass simple, informative laws.”

Assembly Bill 3359 has been referred to the Assembly Transportation and Independent Authorities Committee for review and consideration. [TLS]
