Person Charged in Beating of Driver that Struck Pedestrian

crime scene lpd tlsAfter interviewing several witnesses present during the assault on the driver that fatally struck a pedestrian on Saturday, police have charged a man for the beating, Detective Sergeant Greg Staffordsmith says.

“Officer Eric Cicerello interviewed witnesses present at the time of the assault, and as a result, he ultimately charged, 33 year old Anthony Campbell of Lakewood with Aggravated Assault,” Staffordsith says. “He was processed and released.”

The driver, a 26 year old Lakewood resident, was assaulted after several of the victims’ family members arrived on scene and became enraged after learning of her death, Stattfordsmith says.

The injured driver has since been released from the hospital, as reported yesterday on TLS.

  1. Thanks LPD
This was an accident. Don’t take the law in your own hands. This driver has to live with this all his life. He will never forget.

  2. Violence such as was committed against this driver should never be condoned or tolerated. Am glad charges have been filed. It has just added further tragedy to this already tragic situation.

  3. First of all, I thought they beat up the passenger when he got out of the car to see if he could assist the victim because they thought he was the driver.
Given the severity of the assault victim’s injuries, he had to be airlifted to a trauma center with head injuries, why wasn’t the attacker charged with something more serious than aggravated assault?
I don’t what possessed this genius to beat the driver (passenger) to a pulp, but all he succeeded in accomplishing was making an already tragic situation more horrible by getting himself into legal hot water. Thanks to his actions, the family not only has to deal with the grief of losing a loved one, they have to deal with the possibility of him going to jail too.

  4. He was innocently driving along and someone prob walked out in front of him, not paying attention. People need to relax..he was juat as much a victim as the person he hit..relax please.

  5. Interesting piece.

The Torah does not hold a person responsible for a revenge kill, when the following conditions are met.
    1) The person was killed intentional.
    2) The killer is not in a “Protected city” aka Ihr Miklat. (If he is outside then he is already considered a dead man by the Torah.)
    3) The revenge is carried out by the next of kin.

The reason many commentators give for the above is that a person is not and cannot be held responsible for such a revenge kill, and the Torah does not require us to fight that urge because it is impossible. (See Rav Chaim Shmulevitz in Sichas Mussar).

  6. I just think that if it were me in that situation, I would have trouble not attacking the driver, it would take every ounce of willpower that I have.

    Very hard to judge

  7. People are so quick to judge others. Things happens in the heat of the moment. If my only sister was walking across the streets with no cars on the road than some idiot came out of nowhere doing almost 70 MPH in a 35 and killed her. I would’ve done the same thing. Don’t say what you wouldn’t do until you are actually put in that situation. A innocent woman was killed walking across the street in front of her house. The drive that left the scene should also be charge with leaving the scene of a accident and manslaughter. R.I. P Chandra Martin. You will be deeply miss. OA loves you forever my dear friend 🙁

  8. People often forget or ignore the responsibility they inherit sitting behind the wheel. Put down the phone, food, etc. and please pay attention because lives are in your hands. Please don’t believe you can cross a street and the driver will stop. Being distracted they might never see you. Someone hits my kid I might be inclined to get me some to. Bad situation all around. May she rest on peace.

  9. Is was not your sister!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This guy heart is still beating
and hers is not.r.i.p chandra love you.
p.s hope this guy go to jail for a long time.

  10. It’s a shame that man still here and she isn’t they should have finished him off!! Rip chandra we will miss you!! Everyone else needs to stop judging if you were in the situation you wouldn’t know how to act. He should have never been driving and maybe she’d still be her.

  11. He was the passenger of the car, who got out to check on her and was paid back by being beaten nearly to death. The driver from what I understand fled the scene. So to all you that say he deserved it, please tell me why..he is a victim who is now fighting for his life…justice should be fought in the legal system not amongst each other..you can not be judge jury or exexecutioner especially when the person is innocent…
