Assemblyman Rible Seeks to Expand NJ’s ‘Move Over’ Law

gsp tlsAssemblyman Dave Rible introduced legislation Monday that seeks to improve the “Move Over” law in New Jersey.

The legislation looks to expand the current law, which requires motorists to slow down and change lanes when approaching emergency workers on the state’s highways, to also require motorists to do the same when approaching a disabled vehicle that is displaying or flashing warning lights.

“By expanding this law, we are working to ensure that all residents and visitors of the state remain safe while traveling,” Assemblyman Rible said.

Assemblyman Rible, who sponsored the 2009 legislation known as the “Move Over” law, called on the New Jersey Department of Transportation [DOT] earlier this summer to increase their efforts to raise awareness of the law after one Waldwick police officer was killed and two Pine Beach officers injured while they were pulled over on the road.

Following his call for action, the DOT advertised the “Move Over” law on message signs throughout the state between July 28 and August 2.

“We need to do everything we can to make sure that not only police and emergency personnel, but also those who are operating a disabled vehicle, remain safe while stopped on the state’s busy highways,” Assemblyman Rible said.
