Child Hospitalized after being Struck by a Vehicle

child struckA child is lucky to be alive today after being run over by a vehicle inside a development, police say.

The one-year-old boy was walking inside the Pine River development shortly before 2 p.m. this afternoon when a driver made a turn and didn’t notice the child, police say.

Initial investigation on scene indicated that the center of the vehicle completely went over the child, sources say.

Hatzolah BLS and ALS members responded to the scene and found the injured child in stable condition.

He was transported to Jersey Shore Medical Center.

Sergeant Frank Work tells TLS the child will be kept in the hospital overnight for observation.

Lakewood’s Traffic & Safety division and the Sheriff’s Office are investigating.

  1. I say we make everyone in lakewood take a road test (to make sure they still know the rules of the road and to protect our children). This is not the first time this happened this year. I ask the vaad to make sure this happens, if only foor the safety of the children.

  2. To wow:

I live in Pine River and the kids here play in the street all the time. It may not have been the drivers fault. What was a 1 year old doing in the street??

  3. I say that we do not allow children to play on the streets of our developments. I live in such a development and every time I drive I see more than one potential accident. It should not take a catastrophe R”L to change this horrific lax in safety.

  4. I say all the parents should take a parenting course focused on keeping children out of the streets.
No 1 sounds like your blaming the driver when he was right where he was supposed to be -in the street and the child wasn’t where he was supposed to be -on the sidewalk. So please get your priorities straight before posting stupid comments.

  5. A one year old child in the street is hardly visible to a driver. We had another toddler struck by a car recently. Parents must never let their children out of their sight when they are that young. Letting them play in the street or trusting another very young child to keep an eye on them can lead to disaster. Thank God that this child is doing well. I just observed a father allowing his two toddlers to walk about 25 feet ahead of him in the Costco parking lot. I was terrified that a car would back up and hit them.

  6. i agree with what was a one year old in a street but it can happen in a blink of an eye if its known for children to be playing slow down drive extremely careful this breaks my heart !!!!!!! please please please the driving here in Lakewood is absurd lets share the road stop at stop signs just be courteous to one another !!! less accidents and people getting hit by cars

  7. Re comment #5: Maybe the mothers need to instruct the fathers on safety tips in regard to toddlers. Many men are clueless as they do not have the same experience that women have in regard to these safety issues.

  8. Mothers- stop talking and watch your kids! I think they may be more important then what is for supper tonight and were you got your kids Yom Tov clothes from.

  9. Goldy, as a man, that is an extraordinarily offensive comment to me. I am safety conscious, while the man next to me may not be. Just like my wife is safety conscious, while the woman next to ther is not. Some people are and some people just aren’t. The fact is, I think it’s the opposite, on my block, it is the mothers that are outside WATCHING their 1-2 year olds playing in the street.
Kids play in the street, and Lakewood drivers drive like complete maniacs – unfortunately it is a lethal combination

  10. #4 I must be stupid, since I didn’t notice all the playgrounds for the children to play in. Oh wait, this is not Israel where they make sure to put a park for the children to play to keep them safe. Here in lakewood we would rather be like #4 and build more houses, without anyplace for children to play. This way we can blame the children everytime one of us runs them over. #4 where do you suggest the children play?
