Most of Lakewood’s non-public school children started this school year without textbooks for the first time in twenty years, TLS has learned.
In what he calls “an outrage,” an official confirms to TLS that over 70% of the non-public school children did not receive the necessary textbooks, while the public school children have.
The official noted that the law mandates that textbooks be ordered in June for the next school year, and the fact that Lakewood’s children have not yet received their books is in violation of the law.
In the meantime, schools are using copied papers for the children.
“We are paying thousands of dollars in copies because of this,” a school administrator for one of Lakewood’s largest schools tells TLS.
It’s unknown when the books are expected to arrive, or they have even been ordered, an official from the district who wishes to remain anonymous tells TLS.

Whose responsibility was it to arrange for the books??
Lawyer up Lakewood, lawyer up. This is just the beginning of the end.
someone correct me if im wrong but shouldnt private schools ( non public ) be purchasing their own book ..if they dont have the money they should raise their price … the BOE shouldnt be using public funds for non public use
confused:, in your case all those sending to private schools should not be paying their taxes to public schools…….
to #3
The purchase of textbooks for Non Public School students is State law and State funded. None of the funds are from local dollars. Its been the law for decades.
Martin, You pay public school taxes because you have the right to send your children there K-12. It is your choice to opt out.
informed: State funded?? Are the nurses state funded too?
I beleive local public funds must pay for the books if the DISTRICT gets state funding. All funding that is taken away from the public but thats right, all you get is bussing right?
To Freddie,
For the purpose of Non Public School students the School District receives funds from the State to pay for the textbooks as well as funds from the State to pay for Nursing and funds from the State to pay for technology. All of those funds come from the State of New Jersey not from the State of Lakewood. The State of New Jersey also pays for a majority of the cost of transportation for Non Public School students that receive mandated busing but nothing towards courtesy busing.q
Oldmansfury, i guess you should pay phone service to all verizon, cablevision, att and all. After all you have the option to have them but you opt out and chose one. Does that make any sense?
does this mean that all the students were to get all new textbooks for all subjects this year, that sounds rather odd.
parent and taxpayer it does t mean a new reader. Many textbooks like math books, spelling, vocab, grammar etc are books that the students write in and need new every year.
crazy crazy crazy
every every chlld has the right to a education and that included BOOKS
How can you learn wothout books? its crazy
The public school children have been fighting for books for years.
