PHOTO: When Stopping to Help a Motorist, Make Sure It’s Safe to Do So

chav rocklandPHOTO: The attached photo should serve as a strong reminder for all emergency personnel, as well as Good Samaritans. ‎

The photo is of a scene to which Chaveirim of Rockland was called to, involving a motorist with a flat tire.

Upon arrival however, the Chaveirim member determined that the scene was unsafe to operate on, and refused to help.

A couple of minutes later, a motorist spotted the vehicle on the side of the road and stopped to help, only to get his vehicle sideswiped by a ‎passing motorist. Luckily, he wasn’t killed.

  1. Always carry flares and warning triangles and set 25, 50 and 100 feet behind vehicle if safe to do so. If not leave scene to safety and call 911.

  2. Part of the training that is given to Chaveirim members, is that you should never put your life in danger especially on highways.

Drivers that stopped to help motorists should take extra caution always making sure that you stop in a safe place.

All to often I see cars just stopping not fully pulling off the highway.
