Rally to Stop Sale of Downtown Post Office Planned

rallyA rally is in place to try and stop the sale of the downtown post office. Residents today were giving out the pictured flyer about the rally, planned for Wednesday in front of the post office on Clifton Avenue.

The building went up for sale earlier this year. In 2011, documents obtained by TLS showed they would be relocating their retail offices to the Swarthmore location.

The USPS said then that the economic downturn and increased diversion to the Internet have caused the agency great losses, forcing the closure.

USPS’s intentions were heavily criticized by the Town and by the Township Committee when their decision was first publicized here on TLS in May, 2011.

  1. The post office should NOT be sold. It should continue to operate there. What about the people who walk to the post office? they cannot get out to Swarthmore Avenue. You have to be kidding. What are they doing to the once beautiful town of Lakewood?????

  2. If you ran a business and you were bleeding form all sides, wouldn’t you sell the places that do not make economic sense?

i still don’t understand why we receive mail on Saturday? Businesses are closed. When will politics stop getting in the way of doing things that make sense?

  3. Sounds like a good idea. Then someone can open a usps service like newsmart on county line rd. and we will get efficient service and not have to wait forever on line .

  4. Please move to Swarthmore ! I can drive to Swarthmore and be back home in the time it takes me to wait for the light at Cedarbridge and Main St .

  5. If they open an annex in downtown and open up swarthmore for customers it would actually help Lakewood. It would in essence be adding a 2nd location to the town

  6. Clear Mind says:

Please remove, insensitive comment to those with family members with mental illness, and to all

  8. To ANON:
While I typically do not comment on issues other than the topic at hand, here is where I make an exception.
Your lack of sensitivity by using the word and your inane rebuttal of why there is nothing wrong with your usage is a testimony to the utter disregard you have for other people. Your lack of common decency is so appalling that had I the ability I would ask TLS to ban your IP address from this site.
Now take your little, small, simple minded self and LEAVE.
