Several protestors stood outside the downtown post office this afternoon in an attempt to prevent the sale of the building.
Since the announcement of the sale, Congressman Chris Smith met with USPS officials who gave their commitment that the needs of the downtown customers will continue to be met at a new Contract Postal Unit (CPU) scheduled to open in the coming weeks at 218 Clifton Avenue.
The USPS said then that the economic downturn and increased diversion to the Internet have caused the agency great losses, forcing the closure of the building.

It really saddens me to see the comments anytime there is an article about a group protesting something, referring to them as “crazies” or ‘losers”. There is nothing crazy or shameful about standing up for an issue you believe in. Do you realize that as a Frum Jew, the only reason you are able to practice your religion, and not get fired every friday afternoon is because of the “crazies” who protested in the 60’s for civil rights? Do you realize that your wife can drive and vote because of the “lunatics” who protested for women’s suffrage in the early part of the 20th century?
These people are passionate about saving a beautiful historic building. There is nothing crazy about that. The protesters earlier regarding kaporas are concerned about animal welfare, there is nothing crazy about that.
One has nothing to do with the other: Just because “standing up for your rights” is not crazy but it is possible that the cause you are standing up about is crazy.

Are these the same few that were protesting at the kaporas venue? If yes it must have been some busy day for these miserable bored souls.
Maybe the issue is not so much about the post office leaving the area, but about another historic building possibly slated for demolition by a developer. That would be a shame, for some people. But, how I feel is this – it is just “EItzim v’Avanim” and our being here is temporary any way, so why cry over it?
