USPS asks for Customers’ Assistance in Clearing Walkways and Areas Around Mailboxes

usps post offc lakewood“With heavy snow fall in many areas, Postal Service carriers will attempt to make deliveries wherever possible,” the USPS told TLS today. “The Postal Service is asking customers to help with the safe delivery of mail by keeping walkways and sidewalks clear from snow and ice. In past winter storm events, Postal carriers have suffered serious injuries related to slips, trips and falls due to icy and snow covered walkways and porch steps.”

Letter carriers are instructed to use good judgment, if a potential hazard exists, and to hold mail to addresses where ice and snow are not cleared. “No one wants to inconvenience the customer,” South Jersey A/District Manager Sharon Rogers said. “However, we must ensure the safety of our employees.”

The Postal Service is asking customers to help keep their letter carrier safe this winter through the following actions:

· Clear enough snow from curbside boxes to allow mail trucks to approach the box, deliver the mail and to drive away from the box without danger of the need for backing.

· Walkways should be cleared of snow and ice and allow enough traction to avoid slips, trips or falls.

· Steps should also be kept clear of ice and snow and in good repair so as not to cause injury to the letter carriers or others who visit the customer’s home.

· Overhangs should be clear and free of snow and ice to avoid injury.

“The best way to avoid injury is prevention. Please help our employees provide the best service they can, as safely as possible,” said Rogers. “Your cooperation is most appreciated and will help us provide timely delivery of your mail.”

  1. That is so ignorant! It’s not the postal workers fault that more help is needed in the post offices! Why would you not want to help out those that work under difficult weather conditions?

  2. that they should first deliver every day as required, not skipping my house every second or third day because the mailman is lazy. When they do what the need to do, I will do what I have to do.

  3. So many of these comments are so childish . Most towns will not deliver the mail if the mailbox is blocked. Lakewood is the ony place I have ever seen where mail person gets out of truck and walks to box if a car is parked in front of mailbox.

  4. What area do you live in? I’m wondering if we have the same delivery guy.

I have at least two days a week where I don’t get my mail delivered.

My mailman is the worst and a liar as well. I’ve had 5 or six occasions when tracking a package on-line it shows “delivery attempted… notice left”. There were never notices left (even though none required signatures) and no delivery’s attempted.

I know this because on two of those days I was home all day & I have security cameras at my home – I actually went through a whole day of footage just to find out that my mailman is lazy & a fraud.

When I went in to complain to the local USPS place they told me my mailman was committing fraud, yet they apparently did nothing about it because I’m still having the same issues.

I did spend 20 minutes today clearing the area around my mailbox and did not have mail I was expecting delivered.

p.s. I live in the Albert area
