Princeton Considers Raising Age Requirement for Tobacco Sales to 21 years old; Should Lakewood Follow?

smoking in park lkwd - tls photoPrinceton’s board of health is considering an ordinance that would ban the sale of tobacco and electronic cigarettes to those under the age of 21.

Princeton would join Sayreville, Teaneck and Englewood in enacting such a law, which is higher than the statewide age requirement of 19 years old.

Councilwoman Heather Howard, liaison to the board of health, said about 90 percent of smokers begin before the age of 21 and the ordinance is intended to help prevent young adults from picking up the habit.

“It is so important to intervene during that time frame to prevent them from starting what might be a lifelong addiction,” Howard said. “The issue of when young people start smoking and become addicted is really unfinished business.” Read more in Star Ledger.

Should Lakewood follow such a proposal?

  1. I’m a smoker and yes the age limit should be raised on top of that there is a guy in town ( not drop smoke ) selling these e cigs which have nicotine and get boys addicted . Someone should try and make him understand that he shouldn’t be doing it too make a buck he officially doesn’t sell to under 18 but I have seen him make deliveries to multiple yeshivas

  2. Don’t kid yourself into thinking anyone will stop cause of this (or not start), most kids get their smokes from Virginia (yes, illegal) or duty-free. There’s always neighboring townships too if necessary.

  3. Its a chillul hashem when all these yeshiva bochurs inhale taavah and exhale gaavah.they think thier geshmak but they dont realize they are hurting thier bodies in the meanwhile. Do they not care to live longer.

  4. A town cant make ordinances which contradict with state law, state law always supersedes. An ordnance only holds if there is no current law regarding the specific issue at hand since NJ’s law is 18 an ordnance will never hold up in court and anyone violating will not be able to be charged.

  5. The point here is theat it should be Conveniant that 18 yr old can walk into a gas station . Of course they can go elsewhere and stock up but I think it helps when it’s made harder

  6. It doesnt really matter the age limit because kids can still send adult friends to buy it for them so it doesn’t really matter . I’ve seen kids like around the age of 9 smoking thats crazy

  7. Smoking is not my big concern- the political left make a huge issue over it and everybody else subscribed. Yes- smoking can kill you, but as a firm believer in liberty and self-governance I think regulations should be limited as much as possible. I do believe, though, that the drinking age should be increased a couple of years. This is because drinking causes far more harm than smoking. I am an avid beer drinker and increasing the drinking age would increase beer prices (since much of the beer purchased are from college kids), but I think there would be less harm and deaths if the legal drinking age would be increaed

  8. yes! of course, so many young boys are smoking. ITS CRAZY!
if they raise tthe age many young boys will never start smoking because most boys start smoking in yeshiva and then get addicted, but if the age is 21 it will definitely save many years of many lifes.
