PHOTOS: 500 lb. WWII Bomb Detonated at Joint Base

450x304_q95The 87th Civil Engineer Squadron Explosive Ordnance Disposal responded to an off-base construction site after receiving a request from local officials regarding an unexploded ordnance Thursday afternoon.

The 500 lb. World War II bomb was discovered at Middlesex County College in Edison, N.J.

The college’s police department notified the Joint Base’s EOD technicians upon discovery of the bomb. EOD arrived on scene at approximately 3:30 p.m. and determined that the ordnance required immediate detonation.

“We quickly contacted Joint Base officials who directed us to the proper channels to help address this situation,” said Capt. Michael Amboziak, acting police chief of Middlesex County College.

450x300_q95Providing emergency response resources such as this are equally beneficial to both the communities surrounding JB MDL and joint base members who respond to mutual aid requests. Last year, EOD responded to more than 70 incidents.

“We take pride in being prepared for any scenario on and off base,” said Master Sgt. Mario Kovach, 87th CES flight superintendent. “We train so we can not only support JB MDL, but local communities as well.”

The ordnance was transported to Joint Base ranges and successfully detonated at approximately 11 p.m.
