Rabbi Shmuel Heinemann of the Star-K: Purchasing Chometz Items from Target Should be Avoided if Possible

targetPurchasing Chometz from Target – even locally in Lakewood and Howell – immediately after Pesach should be avoided if possible, Rabbi Shmuel Heinemann of the Star-K tells TLS.

Rabbi Heinemann explains that the items may be from a Jewish distributor that does not sell its Chometz, posing a problem for consumers in regards to Chometz not owned by a non-Jew over Pesach.

If possible, says Rabbi Heinemann, one should avoid purchasing items from Target until four weeks from today, which would be May 10, 2015.

In addition, you must inquire regarding each Shoprite store, says the Rav. The Shoprite store located on Madison Avenue in Lakewood, is okay.

Purchasing Chometz items immediately after Pesach from the following national stores, is okay: (Note change from last year).

BJ’s
CVS
Costco
Food Lion
K-Mart
Mars
Petco
Petsmart
Rite-Aid
Royal Farms
Sam’s Discount Warehouse

  1. what is Target’s distribution time from the distributor to the store? is it possible that chometz in Target today was purchased on Pesach or is it from before pesach?

  2. Why can’t all people buy from the frum stores, why can we help out local frum guys & then have the money circulate in town?

  3. Mom coffee is no problem.
R heineman please clarify which stores are ok because of r Moshe heter & which stores are ok even w/o r Moshe. I think Costco is only ok because of r Moshe heter & some people don’t want to rely on that. That’s why everyone goes to shop rite the night after pesach

  4. Actually, I believe some tunas may have chometz gamur in them (maltodextrin which can be a derivative of wheat). I would assume anything you bought immediately after Pesach was in the store from before Pesach already and hence permitted but that’s just speculation. There are plenty of rabbonim to call but if you gotta throw it out, well thank TLS for stopping you here.

  5. Munchies- if maltodextrin is only a very minor ingredient and is only a derivative of wheat as you say, then the tuna is certainly NOT chametz gamur. Whether you can buy it if it was owned by a yid on pesach is something you should ask your rav. But chametz gamur it is not.

the problem with stop and shop isnt the store itself as they are owned by a dutch company. the problem is one of the distributors.

it should be noted, buying bread, cakes etc are not a problem because of the turnover.

It is also important to understand how the distribution works. Chain stores order in bulk, meaning they will order trailer loads which are shipped to the company’s warehouse. IN that case there is no middleman. So their label of pasta will go from the manuf to the company’s warehouse.

  7. The STARK is pointing out that the Jewish owned distributor that distributed a portion of chometz at target, Safeway stop and shop h ve a mechira done but still operate on pesach it is a chumra to be makpid. A month is what they suggest. Costco has no issues see star k directory for their whole rationale…lmaaseh bdieved fine
