Statewide fatal crashes, reported through the month of April, are at a five-year low and down 9.5 percent from the same period last year, the New Jersey State Police said today. To date, there have been 151 fatalities compared to 152 in 2013. There were 161 fatalities last year at this time.
“Although these statistics show improvement, we know we can do better,” says he NJSP. “This past Memorial Day holiday period, which was Friday, May 22, to Tuesday, May 26, there were 8 fatalities reported statewide.”
“As we wrap up this year’s Click it or Ticket effort, we would like to remind everyone of the importance of wearing a seatbelt. The numbers do not lie. According to the National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration, in 2013, 54% of male passenger vehicle occupants and 41% of female occupants in fatal crashes were unrestrained, and from 2009 to 2013, seat belts have saved nearly 63,000 lives.”
